Grimes is very relatable because she's great at music, looks, personality and being memeable. What is not to like about her? Her music is gorgeous, innovative, fresh and acclaimed. She's got a beautiful 4+ octaves unique soprano voice, she plays multiple instruments, she's a producer/songwriter/singer/video editor & director, dancer, model, visual artist, live performer. She likes nerdy stuff like Dune, LOTR, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, anime and games. She likes Russian and Japanese culture and even speaks a bit of Russian. She studed neuroscience, philosophy, and Russian literature. She learned making music mostly by herself. She created sound packs for Roli. As you can see, she's very interesting, irreplaceable and intriguing. Taylor Swift is not even 1/10 as great as her.

this is true everywhere. Successful females draw the resentment of misogynists, who are the most vocal dissenters. The obsession comes from people who are genuinely fans of the music, or sometimes it's a looks-based thing where they creepily idolize them.
Grimes is especially a target because she's very small and young looking, yet is a vocal feminist and makes feminist music. This naturally means lots of resentment just for being a girl who doesn't hate herself and is confident enough to be her own producer, director, art designer, etc. The misogynists can't believe a woman can make good music, so they assume anyone who does is lying or something. Truth is she just makes great music with a sound that hasn't really been done before. This is why she's so controversial and thus memeable

Grimes is pretty mediocre and forgettable, but not superhorrible. So I think Grimes was the perfect bait for some people, because if people shitposted Corey Feldman this much it would have been too obvious. So Grimes is bad enough to be bait, but not too bad for it to be too obvious.
