honestly I always thought the exhausting work ethic of bands like the Beach Boys and the Beatles is why they ended up with such great songs. Sure there's an emotional artistic side of songwriting, but it IS a craft, plain and simple. I imagine if somebody wrote pop songs so constantly, so consistently, and under as much pressure as Lennon/McCartney/Wilson then you'd get pretty damn good at pop songwriting.
