But also- your taxes don't support them. The Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall support them off the incomes from the aforementioned Duchies, while the Crown Estate is administered for Her Majesty, and the incomes from that proceed directly to Her Majesty's Treasury.
In fact, she ~makes~ the government money. Not to mention all the tourism money from people visiting the Palace to make faces at the Guards.

We fought a civil war to rid ourselves of the monarch, but the constitutional implications were too difficult, and after Cromwell died the easiest way was shuttle in a new monarch to make things work again.
