Why were they able to beat the Patriots twice? What do they have on them that the rest of the league doesn't?

Why were they able to beat the Patriots twice? What do they have on them that the rest of the league doesn't?

Giants fan here.

Honestly I think maybe it has to do w. Coughlin having coached w. Belichek in the past (Coughlin was a wide receivers coach for the G-men from 1988-90, same time Belichek was the Giants' Defensive Coordinator). Maybe Coughlin just knew Belichek better than most other coaches.

Or maybe b/c the Giants don't have an 'animal-themed' knickname....

Or maybe Eli's autism cancels out Belichek/Brady's jedi mind tricks.

Tom Coughlin is a great coach.

I think is the last one..
Eli mind works in a completely different frequency, and belichek cant use his powers on him, its like a puzzle he cant solve, because even Eli himself doesn't know how his own mind works

...

sticky helmets and sample size. all the patriots super bowls have been as close as the giants' ones, it just so happens that giants made a couple of ridiculous catches at crucial moments.

1. Their kicker couldn't bail them out.
2. Their defense couldn't bail them out.
3. Their trickery and cheating couldn't bail them out.

...

eli on coke = unstoppable
>t. ole miss grad

More or less this I think. Other teams had the opportunities they needed, like the Seahawks and Falcons, but they choked when it mattered most, while the Giants didn't. Eli is about as reliable under pressure as any quarterback out there, and the Defense never let the game get away from them.

First game was the combination of Eli's autism and the miracle helmet catch. The second time, it was Eli's autism and the fact the Giants were in their heads.

Also, Welker was anti-clutch.

Coughlin understood Belicheks tendencies, some luck, and a supreme defensive line

18-1 -> lack of totally reasonable adjustments at half time. Pats could have won with simple dink and dunk.

Pats Giants Part II Electric Boogaloo -> Pats had an utterly shit defense, Gronk was hurt, Brady threw some uncharacteristically bad passes at bad points in the game.

Also meme catches in both games and Giants front four playing out of their minds.

Their defense was great both times. Also the Pats don't really blow teams out. It just so happened that the Giants didn't choke on a bag of dicks in crunch time, probably because they don't have an animal theme.

Only a Manning can defeat Brady. They're his kryptonnite. Soon Eli will retire, and Brady will get 5 successive rings unopposed for each remaining finger before he quits.

Brady plays kinda bad when the opposing DL singlehandedly manages to beat his OL.
Then again, when you only rush 4 and manage to pressure no one plays good without an above the average running gamea, which the Pats didn't have in neither SB loss.

During the Brady and Belichick era there is one archtype of team that beats the Patriots consistently. This is literally the only build for a team that has sustained success against the Patriots, that isn't to say the Patriots don't lose games to other teams but only this type gives them a consistent challenge.

1. Team must have a good head coach. Tom Coughlin was a great coach.
2. Team must have a top tier defense.
3. Specifically, the team must have a good pass rush. The Giants from 2007 and 2011 had both of those things.
4. The team must have a QB that can both gun it down the field and not be afraid to throw, even if conditions are not optimal. Eli Manning does both of these things well.
5. Having at least a decent running game and knowing when and how to use it helps but is not necessary.

The teams that have given Brady and Bill trouble over the last 16 years all share these characteristics.
-Those Ravens teams with the monster defenses led by Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Flacco is exactly the type of QB that gives the Pats trouble. Great arm strength and not afraid of the possibility of throwing an INT.
-The recent Seattle teams, good HC, great defense, QB with a strong arm. Seattle is extra dangerous because Wilson doesn't make as many mistakes as Flacco or Eli (though his most famous mistake is more spectacular than any the other two QBs have ever made)
-The Mike Shanahan Broncos teams with great defenses and Jake Plummer slinging the ball all over the field.
-The Rex Ryan lead Jets teams were able to give the Pats fits despite not having the QB component, they made up for it with a good running game. The most important thing is they had a smart head coach and a smothering defense that could rush the QB.
-The recent John Fox/Gary Kubiak Broncos teams. Great defenses.
-That one year the Panthers had a top tier defense, they managed to beat the Patriots.
-The Steelers, back when their defense was still elite.

That's the blueprint

Pretty much this.

Oldfag Giants fans here, which is hell living in New England with all the bandwagon Pats "fans". My take is:

1 - Coughlin "knows" Belichek better than any other NFL coach. They coached together, coached within the same "circle", have similar coaching philosophies, etc. This "knowing" was also a big part of 18-1 Owl because the Giant and Pats played in the last game of the season.

2 - Injuries catching up with the Pats. Brady gimped enough to be wearing a boot before the 1st, Gronk hurt for the 2nd, etc.

3 - DL vs, OL. The Giants simply matched up better and were able to pressure Brady better.

4 - Eli being an idiot savant. You can't rattle him because there's nothing to rattle.

5 - Law of averages. While the Pats do consistently play at a higher level than the rest of the NFL (damn them), they have bad days too. The Pats played bad for them which was good enough for a Giants team playing very well.

6 - Welker is a choker. Hell on wheels during the seasons, folds like a card table when it really matters.

The part about a QB willing to sling it is important. "You take a swing at the king, you better not miss." To beat a great team you have to take risks. I remember a few years ago a Syracuse football game where they were playing a highly ranked team and somehow winning. They were down 4 and on the other team's 40 with like half of the fourth quarter left, and they punted on 4 and 1. Other team marched down the field, scored, and the game was over. When you're David, you take risks to beat Goliath.

It's spelled "Belichick". You should adjust so you don't keep making the same typo while samefagging

This is why the Andy Reid teams never beat the Patriots. Reid is way too conservative.

This. also no refball or target players like the Patriots last two 'win'

>Falcons up by a lot
>Patriots set record for most first downs by penalty in NFL history in SBLI
>Falcons players start getting injured
>Patriots make """epic""" comeback
>Seahawks up
>refs take out Cliff Avril because of a """"""concussion""""""
>let Edelman play after he bounces off of Kam's big hit on that 3rd and 14.
>don't call blatant tripping by Malcolm butler on a 3rd down late in the game

hmmm you might have a point

3 is the only answer.
everything else is your autism or sensationalization talking.

You know how Fry wasn't effected by the Brian Spawn because of his inferior brain waves? Well, that's Eli Manning.

Thank you

And to expand on this, here are things that have NO effect against the Patriots.

-Having superstar/great wide outs
-Having a superstar running back
-Having a fantastic offensive line. The Pats style of play is not dependent on the defense winning the line of scrimmage battle.
-Having a dink and dunk, conservative QB
-Having an amazing secondary has little effect on the Pats because Belichick will never try to compete with them he'll just keep the ball away from them.
-Having a great defense that does not rush the passer has little effect on Brady

Giant luck

Good defense and a couple miracle catches
