Who are the best old-school goth bands? I'm looking for late 70s, early 80s bands. I already know the essentials like The Cure, Bauhaus, Souxsie, Christian Death, Joy Division, Sisters Of Mercy, etc.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry is a great band. Talk About the Weather is fantastic.
The March Violets were labelmates with the Sisters.
Type O Negative were fantastic.

Agreed, but it's still by far the best of the two.

daily reminder that TG era industrial wipes the floor with anything punk at all

Ahh, shit. Well at the top of my head in no particular order, not counting the ones you named:

killing joke
1919
the damned
depeche mode
the chameleons
pink turns blue
red lorry yellow lorry
christian death
cabaret voltaire
type o negative
dead can dance
eastern bloc baby
13th chime
scarecrow
nightfeast
sisters of mercy
the birthday party
Luna (yugoslavian post-punk), check out Vila 1983 demo

I had to skim through my library a little, but that's a bunch of post-punk/new wave/gothy synth pop crap

Instead of arguing about genres, can we actually discuss goth music? I love it.

Punk is for nu-males who think they're tough
Post-punk is for nu-males who think they're troubled existentialists like those cool French dudes they masturbate to
Oi! is a true man's music

at this point in time, punk itself is nu-male punk what's with pro-tranny acts like against me and all that horseshit running about

Punk has always been a hypocritical garbage scene that despite their tantrums was never countet cultural, only 2 good albums in the genre exist. The rest is fucking garbage. Punk is the safest blandest genre there ever was

Rowland S Howard is criminally underrated on this board. Probably my favourite guitarist to come out of my country. All the other stuff you posted is fucking fantastic too

Every modern punk band is gimmicky riot grrl shit or the same boring shit that has already been done, except this time the guitarist/vocalist is transgender

>Modern
>implying punk was ever good

Goth here, not at all disagreeing. I swear, Sup Forums needs more /dark/.

TG era industrial wipes the floor with everything else called "industrial."

1/2

Wrong but ok

...

>Goth here
Literally not a single goth in history would be caught dead saying they're goth.
Retarded millenial.

OG Industrial is best, Post-Industrial can suck edgelord cock.

Fuck off gatekeeper.

>Trying this hard

Industrial was always edgy unique snowflake tier shit.
Not saying it's bad, but have some intellectual honesty here.

You could try, at all.
It's like the ABC of the entire subculture, defining oneself as "goth" back in the day pretty much marked you as a poser asshole, everyone knows that.

you're obviously not a goth bc I am actually a goth, most of my friends are goths and we call eachother and ourselves goths all the time cuz we're goth

Not him. But no. Good shit under the Post Industrial umbrella.

NO WE'RE NOT GOTH GUYS GOD

FUCK OFF FUCKING PREP WE WUZ TRU GOFF

Industrial was about artistic expression, not trying to look as scary or extreme as possible like shock rockers or Post-Industrialists.
Still not as good as 1st wave, 1st wave is life.

What's there to be honest about? Meaningless buzzwords?

>Industrial was about artistic expression
C'mon, that's such a bullshit answer.
Fucking 99% of all music centered subcultures were about artistic expression, at that point we're arguing that specific artists approached them in a superficial way, so by that reasoning just going "everything after this point is fake and superficial" just becomes a broad generalization.

It's only bullshit because you don't like it, SPK and TG were using aesthetic extremism to advocate for their philisophical and political agendas. Downgraded their efforts to "uah sew ejiiee." Do you even avant, bro?

all of them

I wanna pat their floofy heads so bad

*you downgraded their efforts

Fuck off. I pof'd pof'd them first.

If all you care is harsh sounds and that's how you decide if music is great or not, you might as well just blast noise 24/7.

I blast noise too, but no that's not how i decide if something is great or not.
Here is a pretty good gothpunk album.
youtube.com/watch?v=fsC5oDnE_Tw

>American Idiot is a concept album which mocks the punk community, showcasing them as people who destroy their lives and relationships with their cancerous attitude.
Really makes you think

pretty sure it actually glamorizes this state of things

*blocks your way*

No matter how hard one tries, most facial hair just doesn't work with pale make up.
Maybe a soul patch or a very short goatee, basically anything that is extremely well taken care of and "squared", not this gross ass neckbeard shit.
It really makes your facial hair stand out way too much, they start to look like pubes.

At least punk rock is ersatz relative only to the genres that build from it (hardcore, power violence, grind, etc.) all of which is among the best at what it tries to do. Goth/post-punk is ersatz relative to music that existed before and after these genres, being very inferior takes on moody music that offer a watered down affair. This is without mentioning how melodramatic the genre is when it comes to approaching its dark subject matter, being just pop music with a "darker" coat of paint that's just as fake as a Twenty One Pilots when it comes to dealing with similar subject matter.

Well, how would you approach making goth-y music?
What are some genres that "do it right"?

I would just listen to baroque music and medieval era art music as that's where a lot of the tropes of the genre come from and are the tropes that it waters down. Everything else about goth is just boring pop shit. Or I would rather listen to something in the vein of industrial/EBM as that works with a far more interesting set of timbres. Or for the more depression focused stuff I would rather listen to something like Giles Corey or String Quartet No 8 as they offers a far more realistic portrayal of it than the romanticized approach of goth music. People like to claim that the goth pop aesthetic only started getting cringe in the 90s, but it was always "fashion over music" like that.

>Red Lorry Yellow Lorry is a great band. Talk About the Weather is fantastic.
My nigga, probably the best goth album I never see anyone talk about.

This

Godlike instrumentals but i don't really dig the singer
