matthew broderick made music?

What was your response

what about tupac

I said "Ok, but the two main songwriters of the band were gay" and she just went "ugh well whatever" and folded her arms. And then I continued talking.

He was gay though or the other two dudes in Husker Du were because I remember reading this somewhere.

Not the two others, only Bob Mould, the one that looked gay wasn't

>Though Mould's sexual orientation had previously been something of an open secret, he was outed in the early 1990s in an interview in the music magazine Spin; he came to terms with being openly gay, even appearing in the movie Bear Nation, self-identifying as a bear.[37][38]

that pisses me tf off. its ironic that sjw's are against categorization/stereotyping but stereotype people based on norms.

and why does it make a difference whether an artist is involved in the "queer scene"? that music doesnt get attention because its just plain garbage music. not because "society doesnt accept them".

why do people treat music like its about about the glory and attention involved? its about who FUCKING MAKES GOOD MUSIC.

I hate reading about any artist dying because then I think: well shit, this is sad. and now everyone's gonna just do a tribute to this person's music and companies are gonna market the shit out of their death.

>its ironic that sjw's are against categorization/stereotyping but stereotype people based on norms.
For real. There was a gay-themed party thrown recently and some guy got upset on facebook about there being "straight guys with frat bro attitudes infilitrating a queer party" and the guy that threw the damn thing called him out in the comments saying that he and his friends are both "gay and bros" and not to make assumptions about that sort of thing.

This definitely did not happen

it's ridiculous

No it definitely did. Welcome to liberal arts colleges in Seattle, my dude.

This is also someone who asked what music I was playing over the speakers one time and I said "William Tyler" and she responded with "Oh, I don't do white boy music". And it was literally instrumental folk shit. She knew he was white from the name and dismissed it.

Like you all can think I'm making this shit up, but I'm not. College isn't like what Sup Forums makes it out to be, but there are some individuals that are literally walking tumblr stereotypes.

But has there ever been a better gay album than Zen Arcade? I mean maybe Ape of Naples I guess but Zen Arcade's definitely in the Top 5

You should ask her whether David Bowie counts as "white boy music".

I live in Arkansas and you still get these types here.

Got a ride to a punk show from a mutual friend who by all appearances was a black woman, then when I used a female pronoun for her she flipped the fuck out because she prefers to be called xea.

She's all about the 'queer music scene' and it's just a bunch of awful wailing performed by faggots and mediocre music of whatever genre they decide to fuck up, most often whatever requires the lowest amount of effort ("low-fi electronica", punk).

sorry dude but I DON'T THINK YOU FUCKING GET IT

Probably. She LOVES Amy Winehouse though. And of course yesterday was Amy's birthday and she was going on all day mentioning Amy Winehouse to anyone who would listen. She also loves Lana Del Rey to death despite the fact that Lana is a very obviously manufactured artist and an immensely privileged individual whose career was made possible by daddy's money and connections.

Oh, and she idolizes Marilyn Monroe too.

this is literal garbage. fuck modern art.

but ive never seen the mention of death grips trigger someone outside of Sup Forums

Did you expect an intelligent rebuttal from a vapid whore?

To be fair, gay bros are literally the worst demographic to be found in the west right now.

Of course not. I just wanted the final word. And to put her in her place when she was obviously not informed about the music she was insulting.

lmao she really ticked u off didnt she.
to an extent shes right. its experimental so its success is contingent on ur understanding of it.

Ah, classic Tumblr SJWs!

Yeah, but a gay guy calling out other gay guys for not acting in line with how gay guys are "supposed" to act and automatically assuming that someone who deviates from stereotypes couldn't possibly be gay.

Grant Hart was gay. Bob Mould too and there were rumors that they were in an on/off again relationship and a lot of HD's lyrics were about gay drama. Ironically the bass player (forget his name) with the gay porn stache was the only straight guy in the band.

Fuck off.

>that happened

I live in the Bay Area and it's the same way out here. Jordan Peterson had this idea that the ridiculousness of the far left has a direct correlation to the rise of these far right groups. It's the political equivalent of Newton's Third Law.

>jordan peterson

what a guy. wonder what he listens to..

u make it seem like theres an abundance of out of the closet gay frat guys. but he should have just asked first desu.

gr8 b8 m8

Id have to choke a bitch if she said that about chris cornell or layne staley

Nice try Sup Forums but this sort of thing never happens

>experimental music needs to be "understood"
>implying there's any level of skill, artistic depth or nuance to be unearthed in a performance which is nothing but an edgy chick screaming into a loop pedal
>implying this shit is "experimental" when the industrial scene has been doing this kind of stuff for decades

I'm all for experimentalism, but there's a difference between experimental music that demonstrates real ingenuity, and lazy, antagonistic or "provocative" trash like that. I'm not gonna get it because there's nothing to get, its totally superficial.

so, just how popular is Husker Du amongst the college demographic relative to other 80s acts?

t. oldfag

Gee user! You're getting really good at creative writing!

It actually did though. I live in the music-themed dorm so it makes conversations about this sort of stuff really hard because this girl and a couple others are hardcore into tumblr-core stuff and loudly proclaim how much they "hate all dadrock" and ask "Why don't you listen to more Kelela?"

It's hard for you all to believe because you don't experience yourself, but this sort of thing does happen at various institutions in America.

Bullshit. I've never heard anyone talk like that before and I go to UGA.

it isn't. op is making shit up. nobody knows what the fuck husker du is

This. I've seen like a dozen threads in the past week on several boards that are exactly like this. They use major "sjw tumblr fags lel" hyperboles in order to wince at how awful they are. It's basically jerking yourself off.

Not very. Among people who are really into music people know of them, but don't really listen to them. Biggest acts of that era around these parts are Joy Division, Talking Heads, The Cure, and The Smiths. Nobody ever mentions the Replacements, REM are considered sellouts, and most people don't realize that U2 had a career before the year 2000.

from VA. not very. only in seatlle probably.

>it isn't. op is making shit up. nobody knows what the fuck husker du is
She doesn't know who they are but heard us say "Grant Hart" over and over again and got triggered.

But there are people on liberal arts campuses who listen to a lot more than just Top 40. Death Grips has been huge for years now. I heard somebody talking about Cocteau Twins the other day too.

It seems like the Pixies are the only group from that time that's been carried down to subsequent generations in any sizable number. I imagine if Husker Du had reunited (or the Replacements for that matter), the crowds would be full of people old enough to have seen them the first time around.

>cocteau twins

first week of college ever, i met a chick who was single, super hot and liked the smiths and the cocteau twins

The Replacements *did* reunite a few years ago and I saw them in SF. The crowd was indeed mostly oldsters but some scatter people in their 20s as well. I saw X play a few months ago and it was even more oldster than The Mats.

I'll take things that never happened for 500 Alex

Sad. Husker Du had developed a minor cult in the early 90s probably due to grunge / alt bands namedropping them.

You're lying

Yeah, plus Sugar had a small cult following among alt rockers in the 90s.

Grant Hart was bisexual. He had a son born during the 80's. He was married to a woman at the time of his death.

>Biggest acts of that era around these parts are Joy Division
Are the SJW's listening to Joy Division? You might want to let them know that the band, especially Ian Curtis, were right-wing. Curtis would despise these fucking people.

Joy division were not right wing they just had a nazi reference as a name to be edgy

lol. if they were around today they would have been hounded into altering their imagery and publically denouncing national socialism

You aren't really familiar with the band, are you?
Do you know anything about Ian Curtis?

he wasn't straight

what college?

Thi post is sadly very accurate. Though like another user said, add Pixies to that list. I got really into Husker Du and The Replacements my first few years of college and while some of my friends who were really into music said they had heard of them they never cared to listen to them. But of course they knew Pixies, The Smiths and Joy Division.

I think The Replacements and Husker Du were both a bit too raw and ragged to appeal to a lot of people today. Especially Husker, the production on their albums is kind of garbage, though IMO it adds to the charm.

that literally never happened
