Hey Sup Forums i recently saved up enough money to buy my 1st car. After some research i fell in love with the Lexus LS 430 2001-2006(idk the difference between years besides some cosmetics) is this a good starter car?

gotta get those rims that spin

Luxury cars drop in value the most, so getting a used one is a good idea. and 10 years is right in the range where depreciation and value have met up.
BUT, lexus = expensive parts. So while the car might be affordable now maintenance may not be.
I recommend an older civic, camry, or carolla. Or a sentra or altima from the years you mentioned. An elantra is also a possibility.
All inexpensive, but decent starter cars no one can mock you over.

thanks for an actual answer.. Do you think the 430 is still an option?

As a poorfag I have been considering a 430 or late 400. The gas mileage is kinda shit and I'm not sure if the reliability is just a meme.

It seems like most of the ones for sale in my area have north of 250k and the owners want top dollar

jesus christ... ive havent seen 1 with more than 150k miles on it. and they are all going for about 7k where im at

Get an 91 to 99 sc400 or lexus ls400.
Mechanical parts for repair on those aren't to bad when it comes to cost. Plus they have the indestructible 1uzfe engine which are known to be good for 300K plus miles and their pretty quick to boot

The trap of old luxury cars is maintenance. Both from expensive parts and breaking down often (especially if former owners didn’t keep up on maintenance). Lexus are Toyota so hopefully not as bad as buying an old bmw or Mercedes. You may want to pocket some money every month, say equal to your insurance payment, for that inevitable costly breakdown.

If you can find one with low miles
that's the problem now they became popular, prices shot up, but few are even worth buying anymore. After 200,000 miles you never know what you're getting. It could go to 400,000 or crap out in 2 miles. it all depends on the previous owners. Check the radiater for gunk, oil and all fluids, then give her a drive. Run through all gears, if you can give them some gas. Cars like to be revved out every now and then. Don't redline it but get her close. if the owner in the passenger seat gets nervous, then you know he dosn't trust the car. Then you shouldn't either.

It's always an option if you can find a good one. Hell, a 1992 civic is too if you can find a good one. It's all about finding a good one. You gotta look.

theres a 2001 430 with 120k miles for 6k. what u think of that? good condition too

I can’t recommend a mechanic pre-sale check enough. For ~$100 they’ll check every car system for health. Saved my butt once with an old used car.

You could get a 2001 toyota avalon, all electric everything, leather bench seats, for 2k by me recently. I almost bought it just for the bench seats. Those will never be around again, she was a rare one. It had 121k miles.
You seem like you're paying more for the brand, really it's not worth it. The toyota i mentioned probably would have lasted 3x longer for a third the cost. Hell, you could buy 3 cars instead. or 2 and save for repairs.

Not a good choice, it's large hence harder to park. It's gas hungry, the motors in the LS can be pricey if you have something the AFM fail.

Seriously for your first car get a shitbox, you want transport. Reliable CHEAP transport to do shit when you want. Graduate to a "dream" or "cool" car when you can afford better

an avalon is toyotas luxury line too, forgot to mention. You would have been in the lap of luxury versus the lexus. That sounds like bs, but it's not. That avalon compared to a lot of the real nice cars i've been in lately.

Oh and I'm a mechanic/engineer fag. Background is old toyotas and chevy v8s. I drive a corolla daily with 400k on it that I got for a few hundred. Airbags, reliable etc etc.

When I was first buying a car though I bought a pretty cool car, broke down quite a bit, made getting to commitments hard. Would of been better in the long run to have something reliable and bought a second car for the weekends.

The user suggesting the avalon is correct, the 2gr motor is a monster in the later generation ones and is by far easier to get parts for, shits all over most other motors in its class. If I hadn't bought a nissan maxima V6 I'd own a avalon right now for my girlfriend.

Lexus IS basically a Toyota with nice upgrades. The few things you’ll see

>older car means you will have some issues but not as bad as burger made vehicles
>reliability is very good
>v8 engine means you get raped in the asshole every week with bad gas mileage
>v8 requires timing belt change every 80k miles which can run you up to $400 in parts alone, labor will rape your asshole at around $700

If you pic is related, you’ll have bad ride comfort. Need to get rid of those nigger rims and get some nice shit.

user, i know you don't want to hear it, but the 430 is a bad idea.
I get why you want it though, just trust us. Maybe in the future as a second car, but get something reliable for now.
knows whats up.

what year avalon then? and whats a good price?

98-05
anything under 100,000 under 5,000
or up to 130,000 under 2,000
All depending on condition.
The user who suggested a pre-purchase inspection is right. If you can't find a local mechanic to look at it just run through the gears like the other user suggested. Base the owners reaction on how durable the car is.
Always ask for permission first, so if the car blows up you can laugh at them and walk away.

lmfao... ty guys for the help/suggestions. Sup Forums is actually good 4 something other than porn

im def going to look into too, are they customizable?

They're luxury cars, you could customize anything, but luxury cars take more work...
I just looked up custom toyota avalon, theres some nice examples actually...

M8 sometimes just sometimes some of us know something other than porn.

I worked on toyotas and chevs on the side for years to fund my degree in engineering, I can tell you with absolute certainty the older toyota v8s are expensive to run overall when you add up maintenance etc.

Get a shitty reliable beater son. The 400k corolla I got at 300k, literally done nothing since then aside from a set of brake pads, oil changes and a gearbox oil change. My fun/dream car always breaks down and that's what makes my beater corolla a life saver, I can actually enjoy my fun/dream car without fear of it letting me down because its only job is a being a side bitch and I'm not reliant on it. If I had to use it daily I'd of sold it long ago.

Oh and tyres, which I got for $60 off ebay with wheels. 4x100 toyota pattern for the win, you won't regret.

what year is your corolla? and is that a car i should look into or is it expesive?

Mine is a 2002, I got lucky with the deal I got.

Some mid 00's hondas are a good deal too. If you want a larger 4 door their are several choices. The Accord with the k24 motors are good, the Corolla is smaller but I have the station wagon which makes up for it with the 1zz motor which is great for saving gas. Other suggestions I could make are the mazda protege which are ok if maintained, toyota avalon as mentioned. Civic is a good small city car. I'm a big jap fan, I've owned eurotrash before from S600 double glazed god tier mercs to E30 BMWS, they're all work even the shitty 318i econoboxes where electrics fuck out regularly for no reason. I could own MUCH nicer cars than the corolla but the entire idea is saving money these days and having those kind of luxury toys as a side car. Econoboxes for the win.

I'm out for the night anyway user, good luck!

>is it expensive
Have you really looked into cars?
Just spend 5 minutes scrolling through carfax here, i picked my zip code but you can use your own.

thanks bro, late

lexus parts only expensive if you cant spin a wrench yourself and take it to the dealer

these are awesome cars. drive better than many cars 10 years newer

Don't buy a Lexus, BMW, Infiniti or benz as your first car. Buy any of those listed as a lease when you can afford it.

For you first car just get a reliable sedan with gear MPG that has had 1 or 2 owners at most.

Your first car won't be your last. Save your money fool

thoughts on a Honda Civic?

STFU you underage little fuck. You don't have enough money to "fall in love" with a fancy car. You won't be able to afford the repairs and upkeep on a luxury car, and you'll look like a try hard nigger faggot driving around in a 20 year old Lexus pretending like you're hot shit. Go buy a Honda no more than 7-10 year old and stfu.

If you try Googling (your city)+ public auto auction and searching that you'll find tons of vehicles for a great price some of them might have high mileage but a lot of times the owners are either wealthy or have moved on to a newer vehicle are just trying to get out from underneath these cars. there was a 2011 Chevrolet 2500 HD with 200,000 miles for sale for $5,000 where I'm at, with the diesel that's prob still a 10-15k truck

u should only be worried about gas, nothing else prob

No. It will have ridiculous maintenence costs. Get something no older than 10 years old and not a "luxury" car.
