I want to give up alcohol, starting January 1st, for one year

I want to give up alcohol, starting January 1st, for one year.

Has anyone here ever done anything like that, or outright quit?

I fucking love alcohol, and the longest I've ever done is six-weeks.

I associate EVERYTHING with alcohol. Cooking, camping, playing video games, even reading a book.

Does anyone have any tips?

I'm such a degenerate alcoholic. I even have a drink in my hand right now.

Don't drink

go cold turkey

try to find a substitute that's actually good for you and pleasing.. don't know if you're into sweets, but i like smoothies. i also kicked alcohol and basically substituted them with home made shakes and smoothies. they taste good, are nutritious and for some reason make me feel better. i dunno. obviously it's not the same as getting drunk or whatever, but after a while it became almost therapeutic. breakfast? smoothie time. after work? smoothie. after gym? smoooooth. eeee.

I'm three years sober, was the same as you in that I associated everything with alcohol. You just have to associate those things with something else and when that's not possible you'll have to change your lifestyle.
All in all it fuckin sucks dude you'll feel great about quitting for awhile then slowly start to miss it more and more, at least that's how it's worked for me. Sorry that's not the most encouraging thing to say

get your fucking life together. make new goals and chase em. if you spend all your time thinking about not drinking, you're gonna fail. stay busy, stay productive, avoid temptation.

dont wait til january. do it now. if you cant do it now, you wont do it later

>B-BUT HOLIDAYS!

doesn't matter. there are going to be more holidays next year. if you want to seriously do it, do it now.

U will have to fix the underlying issues of your addiction. With addiction comes mental issues. I just got a dwi and got stuck in treatment and thats the only thing that got me to quit. I would go 6 weeks without a drink and tell myself i didnt have a problem. But i did have a prolem. I drank for one reason. To get fucked up. Also, read "adult children of alcoholics" this book will explain everything.

I quit for a year cold turkey. Felt great. No social presuure if your friends arent terrible. Would just say i didnt drink. Felt pretty good. Im pretty deep into it know though. I can drink about 1 liter of 80 proof without anything terrible happening.

Im gonna quit. One day.

Thank you for the replies. I diet once and a while, and the plan lasts six weeks. I find going cold turkey easier than having one every now and then.

I live one of two ways:
-self-destructive lifestyle. Exsessive drinking, eating McDonalds, not working out, etc.
-Perfectly healthy. Every meal planned and super-healthy, no alcohol, steady work-out program, etc.
I don't know how to use moderation.

That was my resolution this year. I made it until June. When hot weather came around I couldn't resist a cold beer...

I quit smoking cold turkey like 6 months ago. I've been smoking since I was 14 (19 now). I've been a real health nut for the last couple of years and waking up every morning with the awful smokers cough and hacking up a lung every time I go to the gym. I ended up going back to it like a month later, but then I forced myself to ween myself off of it. I'm now to smoking one ultra-lite in the morning with coffee and one before bed. OP, don't go cold turkey because it fucking sucks and you'll go right back to your old habits after just a few weeks. You need the self control to gradually ween yourself off of shit. If you have a girlfriend or friends that will give you shit when you slip up, you should be able to pull through.

I used to drink at least 3 times a week
have gotten drunk about 3 times in the past year

Holy shit is this me. I went total straight edge 2017. No booze, ketogenic diet, workout 3x a week.

Now last two months I lost my job and GF and I eat fucking mcdonalds and taco bell every day and drink like four bottles of guinness a day while playing games. All my progress is gone bro.

For the people who quit, what changes did you see in yourself health wise?

Read pic related to quit smoking cold turkey after 15 year habit. He wrote a book to quit drinking maybe it would work for you?

start doing normal drugs , alcohol is a shit tier drug

Yep. Alcohol almost ruined my life, and I quit for two years. I could keep going but, it's been five years now and I do it with dinner sometimes, and sometimes with friends, but I usually don't. I'm lucky in that I can do that.

1) don't worry about your social group. they won't care most of the time

2) get into fitness. I used to drink everyday and I started seriously running and lifting, and knowing I had to go to the gym later pushed the thought away because you dont want to ruin your workout. You don't need to do that necessarily, but I found it really helped to take up something new that you couldn't drink with.

Just do it already OP. I recently stopped and I know it will be for the better.
Getting drunk all the time gets you nowhere.

I have. So far, i mean. I don't have an addiction, so I'm no help. But i quit on September 12th this year. No real need to wait until new year.

fuck alcohol, it is toxic poison, treat it as such

Hmm I drink maybe once or twice a year at the most now, just random champagne at certain events. Drank a lot at college. I'd advise seeing alcohol for the social and emotional crutch it is. I've personally come to hate it and despise any sort of reliance on it in myself or in others as a weakness.

Generally speaking the biggest thing with any addiction is to stay WELL away from people who are doing it or will urge you to do it, so other drinkers or social situations with drinking etc. Applies to every addictive behavior. Just make a decision, if you're mentally healthy enough it's an easy thing to do.

Good advice actually. It's pretty awesome what you can accomplish if you spend all your free time working towards a goal.

> probably the only thing keeping me sober atm is final exams coming up
> am probably going to go on a bender and start watching anime as soon as my last final is done

Save me.

>dont wait til january. do it now.
The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The next best time is today.

I feel you OP, I adore alcohol, it's my best friend. I've been one week sober today which may not sound like much but I think other alcoholics in here can relate. Best of luck to you buddy.

I can also warmly recommend Louis Theroux documentary "Drinking to Oblivion", it was a real wake up call for me.

That's pretty much how I'm feeling. Lol

Thank you for all the sensible advice.

For all it's Traps, Kiddy Porn, and Gore threads, there are good people on /b.

Just move to Utah. You'll fit right in.
