That would mean they are responsible for about 4 men's safety in combat. 4 men have to rely on that, for their survival, if combat comes. They try to get a response from you. Some of them can be pretty damn funny. if you've ever seen Full Metal Jacket - R. Lee Ermey is the drill instructor in it. He was a real drill instructor in the marines at the time and he was originally brought on set to coach an actor into doing it- but they ended up just using him and he improvd the speaking scenes.
No, these drill instructors lead them in shit like physical fitness, teaching discipline--- basically get them prepared for when they go off to their schools to learn their specialty. They call it basic training for a reason.

It's a crapshoot really. When I did basic my platoon only had two drill sergeants, one was a ranger from the 10th mountain and one was an eod sapper from I forgot where. They were both high speed as fuck, our platoon wasn't allowed to be retarded, ever, no phone calls home, never at rest dnc had to be on point or we had to do everything again from scratch, you know.
When we did our final ruck march, the standard was 16k, not too bad. The other platoons hit the 16k mark and threw their gear onto a troop mover and went home, our drill sergeants said "there's no troop movement downrange, we're marching home," and we went another 10k. Based af
But even if you get good drill sergeants the tradoc part of the army (your AIT) will ruin you as far as soldiering goes, big army is fukt

Yes, those were some really memorable scenes. Still, also in response to
, you'd think they would be selected on things like natural authority, experience, leadership, being an example etc. Now it just seems they used drill sergeants as a dumping ground for useless minority hires. That uniform and that rank badge mean something, but they are now less meaningful because they give them away for free to people who don't deserve them. This is not only humiliating for the recruits, who have to respect and obey somebody not worthy of either, but it also lessens the respect for something that used to be the epitome of honour. These women don't get respect because they actually deserve respect, but just because of the rank that has been given to them by superiors.
