I did Judo, and there was a point in which you practiced and competed up to a certain point- 4th degree was the highest that was typically earned through accomplishments.

Anything higher was seen as an honorific or as a way to acknowledge the lifetime of work or dedication of a person to Judo.

I don't know if that helps...

Like so few people have a 10th degree blackbelt, and they're usually in their 90's and not always kicking ass in competition or learning new throws/locks/etc at that point.

Is there an equivalent to this in your art?

1st degree
