Suicide was the leading cause of death among men age 20–44.[5][6] Males are two times more likely to cause their own deaths after a divorce than females are.[9] Nevertheless, suicide is still the leading cause of death for women age 15–34 in Japan.[5][10]

Historically, Japan has been a male-dominated society with strong family ties and correlating social expectations; however, the bursting of the bubblewhich brought about the death of the "jobs-for-life" culture has left these heads of families unexpectedly struggling with job insecurity or the stigma of unemployment.[5] Japan's economy, the world's third-largest, experienced its worst recession since World War II in early 2009, propelling the nation's jobless rate to a record high of 5.7 percent in July 2009.[22] The unemployed accounted for 57 percent of all suicides, the highest rate of any occupation group.[6]

A contributing factor to the suicide statistics among those who were employed was the increasing pressure of retaining jobs by putting in more hours of overtime and taking fewer holidays and sick days. According to government figures, "fatigue from work" and health problems, including work-related depression, were prime motives for suicides, adversely affecting the social wellbeing of salarymen and accounting for 47 percent of the suicides in 2008.

Consumer loan companies have much to do with the suicide rate. The National Police Agency states that one fourth of all suicides are financially motivated. Japanese banks set extremely tough conditions for loans, forcing borrowers to use relatives and friends as guarantors who become liable for the defaulted loans, producing extreme guilt and despair in the borrower. Rather than placing the burden on their guarantors, many have been attempting to take responsibility for their unpaid loans and outstanding debts through life insurance payouts. Lawyers and other experts allege that, in some cases, collectors harass debtors to the point they take this route

Japanese society's attitude toward suicide has been termed "tolerant", and in many occasions suicide is seen as a morally responsible action.

Cultural tolerance of suicide in Japan may also be explained by the concept of amae, or the need to be dependent on and accepted by others. For the Japanese, acceptance and conformity are valued above one's individuality.[29]As a result of this perspective, one's worth is associated with how one is perceived by others.[30] Ultimately, this can lead to fragile self-concept and an increased likelihood of considering dying by suicide when one feels alienated.[29]

Overall, modern public concern about Japan's increasing suicide rate has tended to focus on suicide as a social issue rather than a public health concern. The distinction here is that Japanese culture emphasizes maladjustment into society and social factors as playing a larger role in an individual's decision to commit suicide than an individual psychopathology that is biological in nature.[32] Furthermore, stigma surrounding mental health care still exists in Japan.[10] Thus, there has been more emphasis on reforming social programs that contribute to economic stability (i.e. welfare) rather than creating specific mental health services.

Simultaneous recruiting of new graduates or periodic recruiting of new graduates is the custom that companies hire new graduates all at once and employ them.

In Japan, entry-level jobs are classified further into three categories, that is, entry-level positions for students who have not graduated from high school or university yet, entry-level positions for job-seekers who have recently graduated and entry-level positions for those who have less than 3 years' work experience, however, very few employers post jobs for entry-level positions for job-seekers who have recently graduated. That is why job-seekers who have recently graduated want to apply for entry-level positions for students who have not graduated from high school or university yet.

In Japan, most students hunt for jobsbefore graduation from university or high school. Japanese university students generally begin job hunting all at once in their third year. The government permits companies to begin the selection process and give out informal offers beginning April 1, at the start of the fourth year. These jobs are mainly set to begin on April 1 of the following year. Due to this process, attaining a good position as a regular employee at any other time of year, or any later in life, is extremely difficult.

Since companies prefer to hire new graduates, students who are unsuccessful in attaining a job offer upon graduating often opt to stay in school for another year. According to a survey conducted by Mynavi, nearly 80% of job-seekers who had recently graduated from university had difficulty applying for entry-level positions in Japan.

By contrast, potential employees in Japan are largely judged by their educational background. The prestige of the university and high school that a student attends has a marked effect on their ability to find similarly sought-after jobs as adults.

You managed to kick Kubla Khan's ass and then proceeded to isolate yourself until you got some sweet American freedom. Some Portubros blew up their own boat as a last resort and you ended up believing they were some sort of gods of war. Also the Meiji restauration and whatnot. Actually, Japanese history is kinda fun in how alien it is to me.

Like all OECD nations, you're likely past your prime and suffering the burden of an aging population; eventually China will most assuredly be the regional power. Also, you remain pretty isolationist, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but cannot communicate with people from the outside world to save your lives.

Before the Lost Decade at the start of The '90s, Americans pretty much expected that Japan would be their new Overlords in a decade or two. They were seen as hardworking and proficient in technology and business to the point of being inhuman; it's as if they were an entire country of supernerds (it was only later we learned about THEIR brand of nerd¥ ). Some even wondered if Japan's military defeat in World War II could have been a farsighted Xanatos Gambit to ensure that the resulting military hegemony of the U.S. would become a drain on its industrial resources, thus giving its disarmed ally Japan a competitive advantage.

The U.S. was prepared, oh yes. A large number of movies and shows set 20 Minutes into the Future or later had the U.S. adopting Yen, or all businesses owned by the Japanese. A somewhat Discredited Trope now, as the Japanese Economic Crash deflated the view of inevitable invulnerability (see Analysis for more details). On the flip side, however, several given American industries (especially automobile manufacturing) have come under Japanese dominance so thoroughly by the end of the first decade of the 21st century as to give credence to at least some of the trope's original inspiration, that of the potential superiority of classically group-focused Japanese business models compared to more individualist-minded American ones.

History:
Stole your culture from Tang or Song Dynasty or something. Got fucked by that korean admiral. Nobunaga or Tokugawa Ieyeasu did something or some shit. Did the meiji restoration to modernize really quickly, and beat Russia. Beat China, colonized Korea, and joined the Axis Powers. Raped Nanking, tried to create their prosperity sphere in East Asia. After getting nuked, they rebuilt their economy by making cheap goods in the same way China is now, before moving on to higher quality products. Then your economy stagnated. You guys are having trouble making babies.

Life:
Even though Japan is pretty, living there actually sucks. Kids don't have a childhood like in anime, but instead spend their entire day in schools preparing for examinations. Then, if you manage to get a job, you work 80 hours a week, wasting time at work to make yourself look productive. You don't have time for romantic relationships, and women get jizzed on when they ride public transportation. This is why all Japanese people kill themselves by the time they're 40.

Culture:
Three writing systems, raw fish, kobe beef, shame culture, cherry blossoms, chrysanthemum throne.

Politics:
Japanese people don't pay attention to politics and have basically been under one party rule from LDP (some conservative party) since world war 2. They talk shit about Korea and China even though they fund their tourism. Some people want to change the constitution so that they can have a military again.
