Why does the U.S have so many mentally ill roaming the streets?
I just got back home from a 2 month trip where I travelled to NYC, San Francisco, L.A, San Diego, Vegas and Houston. Everywhere (other than L.A because of how it's built), I saw people who seemed to not be completely right in the brain.
Why aren't they being taken care of? it feels like the other extreme compared to my own country where you get put in a psychiatric ward if you show the slightest sign of mental illness.

Too big and not as compact as New York. Hollywood and that street with the chinese theatre was fun, but it wasn't much to to have to drive for 2-3 hours to get from one point to another.
Reagan defunded our mental health system in the 1980s and we don't have universal health coverage. Most people are homeless because they have mental illnesses that make holding down jobs difficult or impossible. They move to the cities because hick towns don't have any facilities or organizations to help them.
Americans think they succeed by their own efforts, not by luck. This, of course, is mostly not the case as even a shred of bad luck trumps all kinds of effort. If you ask a Canadian if they'd be homeless if they went through the same things some street person went through they'll say probably, yes. If you ask an American you get a line of shit about how tough and hard working and special they are so of course not.
We have the lion's share of the worlds best people but we also drag a bunch of shit eating selfish morons around like a brick around our necks, and for whatever reason they all vote.

Because people on the street are pieces of shit that destroy anything that gets in their way. In the US getting off of the street isn't easy, but it's not impossible like the news names you think. The catch is that YOU have to work really hard to make that happen, and the burden is on you alone to get your shit straight. There are people who become homeless all the time, but then work for a while and get back on their feet. The people you are talking about are destructively lazy, they don't really want to be in the state they are in, but they don't really care.

Because people give them money. I feel for homeless people, I really do, there's a lot in my neighborhood that are obviously crazy. I never give them money though. There is a human resources campus with lots of non profits that provide aid and are trained with dealing with them. If anyone is going to give them what they need to get off the street and rehabilitate themselves, it's those organizations (although they are not nearly equipped enough to handle everyone.) If everyone saved their change/spare money they gave to homeless people directly and instead donated it to these organizations, it would have a much more effective impact rather than just enabling them to go live off of 89 cent Circle K soda and garbage. And crack.
Many mentally ill homeless don't want any help. You can't institutionalize someone who is not a threat to the public or themselves. Notice how the truly mentally ill homeless are not the ones panhandling; they are living in their own world. As a cop I deal with them every single day. Many just want to be left alone. All have EBT/Food stamp/snap cards so they are not starving.

If there's one thing American culture sucks at, it's managing mental illness. People are afraid to talk about it and some illnesses (like schizophrenia, clinical depression, and PTSD) are stigmatized and go untreated. Not only that but hospitals have a little too much leeway to charge and as a result they overcharge. You also have to figure that doctors have to charge more to cover malpractice insurance and other stuff because it's so easy to sue a doctor. Some market reforms, minor regulations, and charity hospitals are necessary in order to combat this. Not only that though, but you went to some of the most expensive and struggling cities in the country so there's bound to be more vagrants with issues. The housing markets in SF, NYC, and LA for example are all shit because they have obscenely high costs of living.

EBT requires a home address. If you lose your house, you lose your EBT after a year if you don't have some place for the mail to be sent. Most mentally ill are also estranged from their families and support bases so they don't have an address. You're full of shit.

well, the reality is that most mentally ill people are not a threat to others, so locking up someone just because they have a mental illness is a violation of their freedom. that said, economic conditions in the US tend to result in many people with mental illness and other medical issues going untreated..
