Can someone redpill me on net neutrality?

Can someone redpill me on net neutrality?

Bump

holy shit that body. MORE!!!!

Corporations can now cuck the internet.

it'll be great because now poorfags and nigs can't ruin the internet

Basically before ISP could not offer preference when providing bandwidth to websites. They had to offer the same amount of bandwidth for all websites
Now ISP can offer preference on what websites that want to increase bandwidth and which websites they want to decrease bandwidth. So this can be a positive and a negative.
It's positive because:
>smaller ISP can now be a competitor when competing in the market. They can do this by offering specialized services ie: being the best social media ISP or the best video steaming ISP
It's negative because:
>ISP can control what websites they want you to visit. If they don't like a certain website they can just decrease the bandwidth for that website, and will make it slow to get to that website.
>ISP companies can now charge you more if they want to for the services we had before for free

It’s time we do something about Ajit Pai.
>Inb4 let’s doxx him

It's worth the read

who's the girl on the pic?

The internet’s not dead yet. We ca still do something, our style.

??? R u gay?

Didn't exist before 2015 and everyone is acting like the sky is falling, even if the internet was fine since its inception to two years ago.

Basically: People/Corporations with money will make deals with your Internet providers, to make sure that their Homesites run smoothly, while making their competitors slower. So then you will take the provider which offers fast internet to the sites you use/like.
Ergo: internet becomes like cable tv. You pay for the "programs" you like, and the competitive market doesnt get that competitive = expensive internet usage.
It's complete an utter bullshit. It's making the Free internet monopolizable.
Go Protest.

Why would you want the government to regulate the internet?

Pai’s a faggot. The companies just wanna charge us more.

ISP's not realising that the internet is a utility like gas, electricity or water.

will this be worldwide, or just the usa?

I want the Government to regulate the way companies who supply the internet operate and behave.

What makes you think that other than you read it on reddit?

The bill that was passed yesterday specificaly prohibits the degradation of service to lawful content

For now, it's just the US. But, as with anything the US does, there are good chances the world will follow in their footsteps.

Or not. The revocation of NN in the US could give an edge over the US to the rest of the world given how omnipresent the net is today.

We'll see how it plays out.

It was okay. It wasn't perfect though. Corporations were pulling silly shit. Big telecom has really failed us in their role in as internet infrastructure, NN as a concept is important to be enshrined as an inviolable protection. You can't decry aggressive community 'policing' in the same breath and then also allow ISPs to act however they want in regards to your data and access to information/communication.

Uh-oh, someone doesn't understand laws.

So, there are things called Obscenity Laws, they can outlaw anything deemed "obscene" by a judge and exist across most of the US.

So, a company could, say in an area where rough porn was considered Obscene, throttle or outright block that content as in that area it is deemed "Obscene" and against the law, making it unlawful content.

Obscenity Laws have been used to halt everything from vanilla pornography, to specifically Homosexual content. They've been used to ban depictions of violence, even drawn or 3D depictions.

Well, violent video games CAN violate certain obscenity laws, so a company could, if they want throttle said content.

That is just one of the myriad of loopholes they can do, and the issue is now that it is in the hands of the FTC instead of the FCC it isn't about preventative measures, its about punitive.

So they can do it, until people sue, and keep doing it until someone wins a case against them, and only then do they have to roll back anything or pay any fines.

Not bad - could have done without the drama / socratic method though. Just want the plain facts.

To me, this seems like our internet costs may go down, and ISP's may have more competition. Why is this bad?
If Comcast throttles my access to Netflix or Amazon rental movies, I'm just going to switch providers to someone who gives me what I want to pay for.

Monitoring this thread.

For a lot of people they only have a single provider that offers "High-speed" internet (100mbps) very few have 2 providers, something in the realm of 12% of people, that offer similar services and even less have 3.

For some that just isn't an option, and even with the passage of the bill many will never see an upstart competitor in their area.

Is it Global or does it just apply to yank ISPs?

This revoke will only affect the United States but other countries might follow suit

in the old days someone would cut his break lines....
>not that I'm saying anyone should do that

wrong board user, try Sup Forums

There will be a new provider to fill their place.

The 'NN' laws allowed the exact same thing but labled it as propaganda and extended the legal power of the government to shut it down by any means.

It's not bad. Reducing their status as a title II company means their positions as monopolies is no longer gauranteed by the government. If nothing else this means operations like google fiber will be able to spread more easily but hopefully we start to see some smaller competitors start to open up.

Yea, because those popped up all the time before NN.....oh wait.....

If you think NN was only enacted to stop "propaganda" you've already drunk the koolaid.

Hope that afterlife on the comet works out for you.....

Nothing on Sup Forums is on the wrong board. It's the random board. Sup Forums is full of Nazis. Stop being the board police.

The actual NN part of the 'Net Neutrality' package has been left relatively unchanged. All you're doing is spouting whatever bullshit you read on reddit.

How retared can you be? It's the GODDAMN FUCKING NAME!!! Net FUCKING Neutrality!!! It means none of the websites you visit will be throttled by their IP Adress.
Congrats Sup Forums. You've done fucked it up. Sup Forums is dead.

Lol, no it hasn't. Learn to read, you can literally read the proposal and its changes online.

NN had government oversight but it also had lots of classification changes and regulations in place to prevent predatory actions on internet data, which have been largely rolled-back.

The classification change also means the managing department is now the FTC instead of the FCC. The FTC deals only in punitive measures, meaning that people now have to file lawsuits and outspend/argue high class lawyers to even see justice if and when a company decides to enact previously outlawed behavior that is harmful to consumers.

It was a mixed bag, but you're too fucking retarded to see that instead of rolling it all back we should have just amended it to prevent what you fucking cunts terrified of the government think they'd do while maintaining consumer protections.

But you're too fucking stupid to understand that you fucking autistic cunt.

Will there though? It's not like there were small ISPs chomping at the bit to compete with major ones in small areas in 2014.

MAGA, FAGGOT. MONITOR THESE NUTSGOOD RIDDANCE

That's not what the bill was. They were allowed to do that under net neutrality, they just had to be up front about it.

I have doubts, but i have full confidence in capitalism to work it out.

how the fuck do you have internet access but not know what NN is about? It's been front page news for weeks.

...

Nothing about this was illegal with or without NN, what the fuck is the point of this post?

This is a stupid idea. The internet is already a near perfect tool. Why would people want to change it? And why would the government be dictating it?

Why do people ask for easily googleable answers? Seriously, it happens all the time.

I honestly want to know, no insults included. Are you trying to start a deeper discussion about NN, or is it just fun to talk to people online?

So now they don't have to be up front about it? That's the only difference?

So what was the bill about then?

If you're not going to read the bill you shouldn't be trying to shill it. Right now you just look like reddit screaming that the sky is falling

I'm just mad, cox sucks some big ass dick. I dont want to pay an extra $10

where you at?

Is DirectTV Internet a thing?

Have you had your brain force today bro

I keep seeing his, but I live in small-town Tennessee and I have 4 providers here. You're telling me New York doesn't have like 7 ISPs all vying for your business? We're not exactly known for capitalistic and technological superiority down here.

Ladies and gentlemen, Ajit Varadaraj Pai.

Most men like Directv because of the sports packages, but women prefer cox. Ecept lesbians who like sports as well, they don't like cox.

Operation PizzaPai

Probably most of the time its people who don't feel like trudging through the articles to piece together the picture. While I'm guilty of this some times, it's also true that some people prefer to learn about the world through conversation, social news... hence trending news feeds on facebook.

I only have 1 in SC, Charter.

AT&T won't run a line my subdivision, only charter serves it.

>Tells other person to read the bill
>Clearly hasn't read the bill

Shut the fuck up

...

We have Charter, AT&T, Verizon Home, The local utility company, and my hometown had all that and one called Ben Lomand. How can it be you guys don't have better? And what about shit like Hughes Net?

>changing your isp isnt so easy like changing your electricity manufacturer, you have lot's of downtime and often have to wait for a technican to actually unplug you from your old isp which could take days or even weeks when the bill passes
>changing ur isp in daytime for music and in the evening for film streaming lel

Oh, and FrontierNet. But they were horrendous. If you live in TN, don't get Frontier. Hopefully Charter doesn't start throttling, but I suspect Tennesseans, of all states, would be fine with going back outside and dropping their internet for being dickheads. It's just strange to me that there are places with two or less options in what most would call more developed regions of the US.

That kinda makes sense. I will keep it in mind to keep cool the next time my parents ask me some ridiculously easy to find out stuff.

You're the one literally lieing about what's changing. Do you work for CNN?

>I have doubts, but i have full confidence in capitalism to work it out.
this is the most deluded thing I've ever heard lol
you really took it to heart when people told you "capitalism good" as a kid, huh?

Repealing Net Neutrality is fucking great.

Comcast, the largest internet provider, owns NBC, parent company of MSNBC. They'll offer a free internet that includes only NBC and MSNBC as news. Poor people in the country will opt for free internet, all the "Daily Caller" and "inforwars" bullshit will be unaccessable. Meanwhile, large media corporations will pay other ISPs for easy access to their news channels. Mildly liberal media that encourages compliance will be by far the most common news source, and the populace will be more placated and less likely to revolt.

Witth net neutrality there is only the internet. Every website gets the same speed and availability.
Without it prepare for
>text only package 5$
>pictures 10$
>news sites 15$
>short video sites (youtube) 20$
>streaming sites (netflix/Hulu) 30$
>gaming/sports package 50$
AND various other premium packages for you to enjoy goyim. Forget that these all came included before look at these deals. Oh and of course the small connect fee 50$ that we charge every one already.

Then what else works better? You really took it to heart when people told you "capitalism bad" as a kid, huh?

The subdivision next to me has AT&T but they told me "You are outside our service area".

Everyone uses Charter already, AT&T service is practically the same 100mbps here and they don't care to expand.

They've drawn the lines across most of the area and who serves who has been basically decided.

Occassionally I'll hear about a friend's neighborhood finally getting whatever of the two they didn't have before, but its been nearly 5 years at this house and there is no sign AT&T will expand here.

you're stupid. there's already a monopoly in the US, they can charge you whatever they want because you have no options. So its either they charge netflix more so netflix charges you more (no net neutrality, which is good because i dont have netflix so i dont pay for what i dont need), or the cable company charges you more with the excuse they have to cover for netflix abuse (net neutrality).

in other words, net neutrality is socialism on the internet, everybody loses by paying more to isp so that a few can benefit

Capitalism and Socialism together, setting utilities and other "needs" to a socialistic structure while "wants" remain largely capitalistic.

Duh.......

You're arguing in favor of all the streets being privately owned so you have to pay to drive anywhere or transport any goods to anyone.

That's not good for capitalism. Capitalism works best with some socialism mixed in.

Just called and they offered me way more than cox would have. Thanks bros

So you think you don't pay to drive on streets now. There is about 50 cents of tax per gallon of gas you buy that would say otherwise.

Most people don't understand the internet. There are fast lanes on the internet only because companies like google and netflix needed an uninterrupted stream to customers. Netflix first paid comcast for their high traffic use and then approached other ISPs to put in dedicated servers predominately for their clients. This was all before net neutrality came into existence. The internet should never be neutral. If netflix comes out with a streaming cable service and again accounts for 75% of internet traffic, they should have to pay more than netflops who has no traffic at all.

Obviously people pay to drive, and pay through taxes to maintain roadways, but if you want to extend the analogy to NN then it would be like having to pay a premium fee to be able to drive on a road with fewer potholes that went straight to your destination vs. the cheaper one that is windy, slow and full of damage which prevents you from going fast. Additionally if you pay a specific corporation to use their streets they'll have shops/stores that they own a stake in on their well maintained roadways, and only allow competing stores to set up shop along their shittier, poorly maintained roadways. Something closer to that.

How is that positive? Nothing would be more annoying to have a series of small ISPs specialized on streaming or social networks just so that they can sell you back the speed you already had before the end of net neutrality was in place but only for particular services.

who is going to pay this?
are you going to? are your friends and coworkers?
no. no one would pay for a plan like this

if the porn only package was $12.99 a month as opposed to the current $69.99 i already pay for unlimited of anything, which i don't use or need, I'll take it.

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE!

"Can someone please tell me what to think?"

Cool fanfic bro

so you're saying we would pay $140 for unlimited internet? Isn't that what they do now? They charge you for everything and they can increase the fees as they like because no competition.

so tell me again how does net neutrality keep them from overcharging you? In a way a la carte would be better, then i could slice my bill since i dont use social media shit

I already pay for paved streets and fixing pot holes. We all pitch in with taxes nothing is free

Oh god. Now libtards are going to be screeching that this is another way to prevent niggers from getting jobs, further reinforcing the idea that it isn't their fault they steal shit.

It's positive for the economy and its can also be positive for the consumer. If these small companies end up expanding, then they will increase the number of employees needed, which will in turn mean more money is being put into the economy,
It's good for the consumer because now you can have specialized ISP. If you're a gamer then you can get an ISP that is dedicated to offering the best internet for gamer
