the gatefold double-LP is gorgeous - certainly one of my favorite physical jazz-releases cover design-wise from this decade

I've never understood the hype for this label. Most everything I've heard from them just sounds really bland.

Seems like you might only be listening at surface level. Don't expect weird instruments or gimmicks. The guys that play on criss cross are some of the best at the purely musical aspects of jazz that can be hard to pick up on if you don't play jazz yourself. Things like complex time signatures, motivic development, harmonic superimposition, group interaction.

If I didn't have some experience playing jazz I would probably think it was bland too t b h.
