What (relevant) country do Germans consider to be their closest ally and friend?

I used to think it was us because of the Marshall Plan, but our relations have clearly soured recently.

Politically France because the others are either too small or on a different course. Culturally the country poses the great meeting point of central Europe and is rather divided. Northern Germans like Danes, northwestern Germans like Dutch, Southwestern Germans like French, Southeastern Germans like Austrians, Eastern Germans like Poles.

Netherlands, France and Austria the most probably but Germans really like any country because we're very oblivious to what other countries think about us. As long as you aren't brown or Eastern European, (average) Germans like everyone.
