Oh yeah, major difference. I'll use the same example that I give whenever I explain this stuff:
Ever play Mass Effect? In the original trilogy, there were a few "aliens" you could pursue. Using the female options as an example, let's go with Liara T'Soni and Tali vas Normandy (I think I got that right). Those two, among players that prefer females, are generally considered to be fairly attractive. The thing is, those two characters are for all intents and purposes, human. (Not story/canon-wise, but come on. The anatomy of these characters is undeniably human. The only difference between between these characters and humans are that Liara has blue skin and head-tentacles, while Tali has fewer fingers/toes and whatever-the-fuck she has going on under that helmet.
Furry art, for the most part, is the same way: Human shapes with secondary animal features. It's on sort of a sliding scale; if it looks a bit "exotic", it becomes more enticing/arousing. This can also probably explain why some people have "race" fetishes. Now after a certain point, the further you get from looking like a human, the less arousing it becomes.
Then you have the people that would full on prefer to fuck animals and make art depicting such. This, I don't understand at all. Fucking actual animals is disgusting as all hell. From a biological standpoint, I can't even see the attraction.
