The EU suffers from two things.
1. Lack of journalists. Critical journalists are essential to keep politicians with their feet on the ground. But critical journalists are shunned from Brussels.
2. Lack of trust. National politicians, even the pro-EU ones, refuse to let the EU act decisively on anything. Because they do not believe the EU can act in a balanced manner.
