A 14 year old girl isn't going to see things clearly. On the one hand I think you're probably ultimately right, but a unique perspective to look at it from is that teenagers are generally weak people. Sure, there's some who are thicker skinned, but emotionally literally every normal teenager is emotionally compromised to a certain extent, and I think the internet only exacerbates this fact. I have a totally unscientific theory that the social bonds that are normally formed among teenagers are disappearing because of the internet. When I was a boy my family transferred into a country for work, and I ended up as the only stranger in a little village school, not knowing the language, I literally spent from 11-14 being heavily bullied , from having my jacket torn away, to being once thrown down a 11ft cliff.
My parents didn't do a thing since they thought it was my battle and I had to "man up" and I simply never spoke to anybody about it, teachers tried to fix but every times they tried to denunce to the parents about what their children where doing , the parents didn't do shit , blaming me of being the one wrong after hearing their children versions and excuse for daily beating another child 8 against 1 , and simply things got even worse every time they tried to help the situation.
Clearly a child can do extremely irrational decisions , but i believe it's also a matter of personality, probably the poor thing couldn't stand what was happening to her anymore and , well in those occasions you simply lose your mind, and can't think clearly.
