I'm a movie buff and gamer but I want to dip my toes in other hobbies. I tried with Sup Forums but they all gave me retarded unhelpful answers.
How do I into music? What genres should I listen to? Should I study the history of music and the history of the genres I like?
I usually listen to whatever I find pleasing to the ear but the concept of doing research on an artists'/band's personal life and having a favorite "album" are foreign to me
movies have music in them, oftentimes with bands playing so you're halfway there.

Rateyourmusic.com is your friend, just don't take the great albums of all time list to heart. Listen to whatever you stumble upon on here and there and find more similar album based off genres. People will shit on you for having entry level taste or whatever, but you gotta start somewhere so just ignore them and find more shit you enjoy.
David Gutierrez
When I meant the greatest album of all time list, I was referring to this:
rateyourmusic.com is DOGSHIT. just follow your intuition, fuck what other people think of your taste and fuck this board completely, it's full of assholes. you will get no helpful advice.
Jose Smith
Just listen what other people listen. When you start to grasp it you can search music without caring for opinions. Listen to what you like user. Here they always give crap for liking something, so dont worry about it. And dont think to much about listening to music. No need to study.

Here's a pretty good chart for beginners in electronic subgenres
Find a genre you're more into, and look into that. Most people have a basic level of knowledge when it comes to everything broadly, but have more in-depth knowledge of genres they are more into and thus are more familiar with.
Camden Lopez
Listen to Silverchair. Neon Ballroom would be my recommendation.

they just wanna set you up as a Sup Forums mu sheep, don't bother. listen to what you like, let your interest grow naturally as it did in the way you became a movie buff. don't force feed yourself art, especially not from this godforsaken site.
Henry Reyes
>Sup Forums mu sheep Everyone's essentially some kind of sheep when they start out, whether it's shit played on the radio, shit your friends like, shit that gets media attention, shit that's on the charts, shit that ends up on "best of" lists…you just gotta start somewhere, and work from that.

this site's charts is SO limited and deeply malnourished and missing so much great music and this board is full of nazis trying to force everyone to agree and brainwash each other. you - whoever may read this - are better off without the terrible advice you'll get here. come here for a laugh only, these people don't know dick about music.

You're right user, you're so unique and deep You didn't get recs from anybody ever (as though that's even a bad thing)

Don't bother listening, learn to play yourself.
I used to listen to others but its a waste of your time and days, play your own music, get a guitar learn some beginner chords.

This is a pretty good way but I would ad, Sup Forums has its own taste so the overall "essentials" chart is slanted heavily towards certain genres and aesthetics. Even the genre specific essentials charts may omit albums that are considered classic or important to a genre just because whoever made the chart didn't like them. If you can identify some genres you want to explore, it's a good idea to just do some general internet searches about "rock history", "origins of techno", etc. to get a more general perspective.
I also think it's very useful to get an overall historical timeline in your head about various major areas in the modern era - rock, electronic music, jazz, hip hop, etc. - so you can understand what came when and how these things influenced one another.
In general, a way of finding artists you like is checking the other releases on the same label as an artist you know you like (applies more to smaller labels - don't try to go listen to everything on Capitol or something, haha). Especially useful for metal, electronic subgenres, and other areas where there's not much publicity for artists and there's always tons of high quality stuff being released by new and unheard of artists.

>I'm a movie buff and gamer So you pay to see every Hollywood shitness and own a PS4 and 3 FPS games. Fuck off, you don't belong here and asking to be spoonfed is pathetic.

Use greatest of all time lists (RYM, Sup Forums essentials, and countless others), listen to any album or artist posted on Sup Forums that seems interesting (literally even if just the cover of an album seems appealing, just check out music)
that's what I did anyway
Some albums to start you off: OK Computer The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars Dark Side of The Moon Is This It Funeral there are all rock classics that are easy to get into
and yet you're here
Hunter Collins
I watch through a director's body of work to see how they evolve as artists and to spot their signature style. I pay close attention to pacing, character development, shot composition, camera techniques, etc. I memorize the names of directors and actors and also the names of characters, even minor ones( I'm surprised that few people actually do this). I actually took the time to read up on the history of Hollywood and foreign film industries and some more stuff.
Joseph Jenkins
I pirate my games and haven't gone to the movie theater in 3 years. I hate FPS btw. >asking to be spoonfed is pathetic. If I don't I get laughed out for having shit taste.
Joseph Howard
So you know nothing about movies and music. Go find something out about them and then come back to talk about it.
Jayden Gutierrez
thats the purpose of the music board buffoon. You don't have to go to the theater and support a decadent institution that is Hollywood to know about film

The purpose of this board is to discuss music. It is not to ask people to tell you what to like so you can become part of an imagined hivemind. If you don't know anything about music don't post on this board. If you lurk you might find something.

Work with what you already enjoy, and use it as a bridge to listen to other artists that aren't in your comfort zone, so you can find out what you're inclined to like or dislike and build your musical taste. You won't simply jump to harsh noise from the start, but i advise you this, if you listen to an artist and decide they are unacessible, check them out later once you went down in the rabbit hole.

Here's the way I do it >find genre I want to get into >build collage on topsters.net of some essentials and some obscure albums >spend around a month learning the history of the genre and listening to the topsters collage
It's worked quite well for me thus far. Right now i'm going through Midwest Emo and i'm finding a lot of stuff I like that I wouldn't have found had I only listened to the essentials. This is only a suggestion though, it might be a bit too structured for someone new to this and you'll eventually develop your own process for discovering new music that works for you.
