The official history is now that they were waystations where prisoners would be processed and sent to death camps in the east, which were all coincidentally in parts of the country that were 'liberated' by the Russians.

Also remember that upwards of 40 million (some estimates say more than 60 million) non-combatant Europeans were killed during the war, and the western powers interned German civilians with explicit orders that they not be given food.
