Which 'release' of Star wars (that you can realistically get your hands on in 2016) is closest the original theatrical release that people would have sat and watched in 1977?
Am I right in thinking 'Hamry's Despecialised' is essentially the VHS/Laserdisc version (which is as close to the original that anyone could ever buy), just redone to not look like total shit? Or does it include any changes/fixes?
All the others are shit. All those fucking ugly cgi effects...
Julian Lopez
>Am I right in thinking 'Hamry's Despecialised' is essentially the VHS/Laserdisc version
No, it takes a lot from it, but it has a fucking LOT of work done to it. I mean MASSIVE manhours poured into it to make it a complete restoration.
Benjamin Smith
>Am I right in thinking 'Hamry's Despecialised' is essentially the VHS/Laserdisc version No, it's primarily based on the blu ray with laserdisc and other sources used to cover up the special edition changes.
Luke Williams
>No, it takes a lot from it, but it has a fucking LOT of work done to it. I mean MASSIVE manhours poured into it to make it a complete restoration.
Yeah I get that, it blows my mind someone sat and traced shit frame by frame, but thats not what I'm getting at. I mean is it essentially a 'remaster' of the film as it would have appeared in 1977, or does it fix or add anything? I have it downloaded and from flicking through it seems to get rid of all the obvious shit.
Lucas Martinez
Nothing is added.
Anthony Taylor
> I mean is it essentially a 'remaster' of the film as it would have appeared in 1977,
That was the entire point, to bring it back to the theatrical release as best they could. You know what they did to it, but you don't know their entire aim?
> I have it downloaded and from flicking through it
So just fucking watch it and stop asking retarded questions you dense faggot.
Asher Brooks
The silver screen edition is the most "pure" restoration out there (being derived completely from an original film print) but due to the age and quality of the source the image quality isn't as sharp as the others.
Honestly, unless you're an "purist" in the most autistic sense just go with Harmy. It's the best of both worlds (restoration by Lucasfilm without the retarded changes).
Eli King
Huh, I thought 2.5 was the last and that he wasn't doing any more work on it.
Lucas Fisher
You can't just "stop" with projects like that.
New information/techniques/sources will always come to light and more work will be required.
David Sanders
I have to write on it for a uni paper and we have to use the original theatrical release (or as close as possible), this is the reason for my autism.
I'm not about to head over to fucking Ebay, spend 400 quid on a Phillips Laserdisc, pay god knows how much for the film itself, all for a handful of screengrabs for a 3000 word paper.
Is there a torrent of this 'silver screen edition'? I can't see it on PirateBay.
Landon Thomas
Here's a comparison of the Despecialized (top), the Silver Screen (bottom) and the Laserdisc rip (bottom). I can't stand the weird blue X-wings in the blu-ray/despecialized versions so I prefer the Silver Screen version, it reminds me of being a young boy and falling in love with Luke for the first time all over again.
Isaiah Bell
Just google star wars silver screen mega link
Ayden Long
The 1997 special edition vhs are probably the best incarnations of the films out their. Most of the changes make the film better without going overboard and it looks great.
Evan Cox
Yeah but the CGI Jabba and Greedo shooting first scenes were at their most obnoxious in that version. They actually tried fixing that somewhat in the later DVD and bluray versions.
Kayden Brown
>it reminds me of being a young boy and falling in love with Luke for the first time all over again. Mmm yes...
Nicholas Harris
Honestly the newer CGI looked much worse in the new versions IMO. The darker skin made it feel far more out of place. Like it didn't fit with the lighting of the room.
Luke Cooper
Reminder that George Lucas destroyed the original 1977 prints of Star Wars.
Is he the worst filmmaker of all time?
Tyler Wood
>all others have the CGI effects
Don't listen to this nigger. The 2006 limited editions include the original theatrical cuts with no added or altered effects.
Andrew White
What master were the blu-rays struck from?
I feel Disney may be sitting on a really good copy waiting for the 40th anniversary next year.
Aaron White
>What master were the blu-rays struck from? Well Lucas said he altered the original prints.
But apparently The Silver Screen copy comes from an original 35mm print.
>Previously, Lucasfilm made us believe that the original negatives of Star Wars that they had in their possession were permanently altered for the Special Edition releases of the movies, making restoration essentially impossible.
Is this is a joke? Isn't that the version where Luke screams as he drops off the platform in Sky City?
That's right
Landon Rodriguez
this
Isaiah Hernandez
Where the shit is the most up to date version of the Silver Screen video?
Is the Mega F!4B1BBIDC!NcrZlK2VzZ21_J4sUs6VuA it?
Brayden Nelson
Those have been OOP for years and even if you do find a copy the quality's shit.
Juan Smith
>OOP for years
That's why the box says LIMITED edition. They didn't make them for long.
>The quality is shit
Hate to break it to you, but your autism doesn't affect everyone else's viewing experience, user.
Juan Richardson
There's multiple 35mm prints but usually only one master. The Silver Screen comes from a theatre print.
Jayden Jenkins
Nobody is disputing that. However the 35mm prints out there aren't good quality anymore.
You need to use the master negatives that were properly stored to get a good restoration, and if those have been altered then there is no way anymore.
Ian Lopez
Non-anamorphic video in 2016 is pretty big deal user.
Liam White
>The Silver Screen comes from a theatre print. How do you get it? Google just shows up a bunch of faggots talking about an Invite only torrent site, and the Reddit link is an old version.
Cameron Ortiz
I've watched them. It's not that bad. You have to be one of those post 1995 special snowflake babies who break down and throw a bitch fit when a movie isn't in 4K and 60fps.
Levi Peterson
Left out the end of my statement.
In order for it to bother you
Matthew Russell
>there is no way anymore Restoration technology has come a long way in the last 10 years. Judging by what a bunch of autistic nerds on the internet were able to accomplish with so few resources, materials or financial incentive, I find it hard to believe that Disney can't produce something of equal or better quality with their access to the original masters.
And also, as Episode VII demonstrated, Disney aren't beholden to any of Lucas' original wishes or ideas.
James Lee
>I find it hard to believe that Disney can't produce something of equal or better quality with their access to the original masters.
You can't unalter masters friend.
Ryder Adams
>and the Reddit link is an old version.
>Where the shit is the most up to date version of the Silver Screen video?
>Is the Mega F!4B1BBIDC!NcrZlK2VzZ21_J4sUs6VuA it?
Is that it? That's what I'm downloading right now.
Jordan Bell
>go to resale shop >find Star Wars vhs just remember that its on vhs
William King
I was born in the 80s, fyi. It doesn't bother me in that I can't watch it. It bothers me because: 1. I know they are capable of better, at little cost to themselves 2. They knowingly put out a sub-par product to make their "Special Edition" look better
And that's not even getting into the fact that it's a lazy double dip from the 2004 DVD release.
Connor Rodriguez
>Shitty meme home format when restored film exists
Jacob Gomez
Hamry's is a meme, don't listen to the redditors.
Jason King
I can understand where you're coming from, but I just appreciate the fact that they made a dvd release of the original versions in the first place. They're still the movies I love. At least it's a step up from the 1995 trilogy release.
Matthew Bailey
Yeah, it exists in 1.0, 1.5 and 1.6 forms apparently. I gather the final jump is mostly audio, but I'm not sure.
No idea where the fuck you get it. Quite why you'd spend 3 years remastering a film frame by frame then not make it easy to acquire is beyond me. They could just have (((someone))) (((accidentally))) leak it.
Jonathan Smith
Explain.
Thomas Campbell
No, but with the right resources you can create a composite print that's close enough in quality to the original that doesn't have those crappy changes.
Of course, all this is assuming Lucas wasn't lying out his ass about the original master being permanently altered/destroyed.
Connor Scott
They're playing on the razor thin line between fanediting and the point where Disney starts suing them.
Similarly, I think Harmy's edition is only "allowed" to exist based on their "scout's honor" system where you're encouraged to buy the bluray before downloading.
Jace Cooper
Whatever the most recent team negative 1 release is. Its literally a 1977 35mm scanned and cleaned up frame by frame. Harmy admitted its better than the current despecialized of anh (for now)
Harmys is not the 06 dvd. It is mostly the blu ray color corrected then frankensteined with 10 other sources
Andrew Clark
The real question is why was the creation of the definitive version left to the community?
