A lot of middle-easterners unironically believe that music with instruments is haram, and their societies are very conservative in general, so there's very little "alternative" music that would appeal to us. They make some good propaganda music though, just youtube "hezbollah nasheed".

it only takes a surface level understanding of history to know why there wasn't much artsy underground western-influenced music in the middle east in the late 70s early 80s
