If an animal is aggressive toward a human that is cause for it to be euthanized. Most people don't turn in aggressive dogs, which is a pity because then will then go on to cause serious damage to another human.
If they hadn't taken the action they did and even if the animal had sauntered away, the parents (more likely the state itself) would have charged the keepers on staff with criminal negligence and sued the living hell out of the zoo itself.
The zoo will probably be shut down.
