I believe Del Torro had the story done for 2 movies (there was only supposed to be 2 until the studio got involved I believe). Jackson was put in charge after Del Torro fell through, they completely scrapped Del Torro's script and went through alot of the 3 films winging it. Jackson didn't have the time he had for the LOTR trilogy and wound up getting burnt out.
