What is the strangest product of evolution?
For me it's a tough call between:
>mitochondria: For some reason a bacterium was producing waste products with a lot of potential energy stored in them (which makes no sense), and so happened to be eaten by a cell that could utilise those waste products but was incapable of digesting the bacterium
>genetics-based gender: Body growth is shaped by chemical signals, except that instead of using gender-based hormones for everything it interprets a missing section of DNA for a large part of differences between genders. Whatever first evolved to have XY chromosomes would have had to not only have a doubled chromosome, but also not be horribly mutated by one of those chromosomes having 25% of it lopped off
