The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.
Ya'll should check this album out. Quite the experience. It captures such a breadth of different styles with little effort and manages to be one of the most unique albums of 1996.
this meme was all i could think about when seeing all the rick rubin award memes this week

Trying to organize myself with a new chart and post a little more regularly again. Last time I bit off a more than I could chew and got sick of it.
Thoughts on the chart? What have you heard/liked/hated?
Joshua Peterson
>hasnt heard let my children hear music prepare for tears
Nathaniel Myers
that tzusing is great and i'm literally finishing listening to rourke's Fast Car for the first time, it's pretty sweet
Adam Hughes
I like cheval retrecie, even if the b side is insane. I still need to hear that nazoranai! dogwander hyped it up
Henry Taylor
only time i cried to music was when i was listening to a love supreme and i stubbed my toe
ben frost has been on a decline since by the throat but I still feel like gotta give him another shot
yea it has an absurd average on rym and I love O'Rourke so I need to get around to it
I look forward to both that and the new haino/o'rourke/ambarchi coming out this month, I feel like it's been too long since I've listened to the trio
Cooper Hill
>i cried to music was when i was listening to a love supreme and i stubbed my toe Finally, someone who heard it the way Coltrane intended.
Christian Campbell
the Lisova kolekciya remaster is A+ I put it in the sharethread for those interested
Kayden Williams
>tfw I want to make a listening chart, but I know no one here would care about my shit opinions. music for this feel?
Jaxson Peterson
Don't worry, if you give a score of 3 (sometimes 3.5) or below to an album someone likes, you will get at least one (You) mocking your taste.
Connor Flores
you dont have to write reviews like some people do, you can just post scores and let people ask for opinions on certain albums.
then again if your chart is filled with obscure shit i think it's better to write a review, otherwise you can do what Letov says for free (You)'s
Aiden Phillips
Gonna use this as a chart.
Charlie Haden & Hank Jones - Steal Away >Jazz, Gospel, Hymns I liked the idea of a bass/piano duo playing spiritual music but this did not live up to my expectations. Wholly unoriginal and uninspired traipse through songs like Amazing Grace and Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen. Rarely deviates from the melody lines and ends up being passable music for the background of a church. Certainly not terrible but I don't recommend. 5.0 /10
"""""""""wow not true we totally care about your opinions""""""" Make a chart or don't but don't be a little bitch about it.
Aiden Ward
that OP pic is deloused in the comatorium :'(
Andrew Scott
make people care with shitposting
Jose Mitchell
>I know no one here would care about my shit opinions. what a lousy crummy no good attitude dummy lemme splain this to U one day I showed up and started talking about how good Sondre Lerche is and how king crimson's discipline is a 3/10. /daily/ has been putting up with it for 3 years now and there's nothing they can do to stop me. except givingbear, he knows where I live IRL and could kill me. tl;dr, listen to sondre lerche's self titled album and review it. pic related.
David Robinson
Wew theyre remastering ukrainian underground releases now? Muh dik

can anyone tell me why the soundtrack for Twin Peaks: The Return is so highly rated? Everything that isn't a returning song is just a throwaway ambient song.
Christian Foster
Hopefully we see more, only the mysterious and ethereal sounding ones are getting any mainstream love so far.
The only people rating it are people who like the show. Twin Peaks is pretty RYM approved, so once it hit the charts people didn't mass-downrate it like they did with Nier and Persona.
Jonathan Thompson
i wanted music, not retarded advice will return thanks
I get that, but the music is really nothing special. Of the non-returning songs, "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" and "The Fireman" are the only worthwhile ones at all. I'm one of 15 friends who rated it below a 4/5. For christ's sake it's the 2nd highest-rated album of 2017.
Lynch fanboyism knows no bounds I guess.
looks neat, i'll backlog it
Samuel Young
hey calm down man
Ryan Allen
You didn't like Heartbreaking?
Eli Walker
depends: Are you asking me if I like the scene it's used in or the song by itself?
However, the song on its own isn't really anything special, so my answer is no.
There is no difference between what people are doing with that album and when people mass-positively rate a soundtrack from a videogame they like.
Robert Ross
then again, maybe there is something special that people see that isn't just purely aesthetic or related to the television show they like, but I don't see it.
Logan Reed
my work plays this song all the time am I supposed to like or dislike this?
Sebastian Gonzalez
does "slab of aspic" sound that angry
Blake Perry
Well, I think that people's thoughts on a soundtrack are always going to be influenced by their thoughts on what it came from, given how music triggers people's memories and the feelings related to those memories. Not many people listen to a soundtrack before watching the movie so that they can have a totally unbiased view of it.
That said, I thought it was one of the highlights of the soundtrack, but in hindsight I do not know if I would have much of an opinion on it had it been from any other scene.
Only you can answer this question.
Levi Rivera
I did not, sorry "jelly made with meat stock" bruh
Lincoln Wright
Good, because it is bad

Today I deviated from my quest to attain TRVE CVLT enlightenment and listened to a few other albums.
Earle Brown's Music for Pianos The first Atonal music project I've ever listened to in its entirety, and I'm afraid I still don't get it. However, I just can't make an educated opinion on it. Its like trying to "get" Calculus right after learning how to count.
Burzum - The Ways of Yore My favourite Burzum album so far, no doubts. Varg released his inner D&D nerd and finally made a pleasant, atmospheric, at times even beautiful album that makes me feel like a little kid exploring some ancient nordic ruin. The narration can get a bit silly at time, though. 8/10
Fishbach - A ta Merci Beautiful voice, dark atmosphere, and the most glaring nostalgia boner for the 80's ever. This album revels in its melodramatic lyrics and themes, and minimalistic yet catchy melodies. My main problems were the tackiness of the lyrics, especially the ones that seemed to almost fetishize Death, and that the second half of the album is forgettable as hell. Un Autre Que Moi and Eternité are great jams though. 6.5/10
I found this dog in Mazamitla, a small Mexican town.
Connor James
More reviews for your face. Shortened + didn't review everything so no one gets mad at me :((
>Novos Baianos - Novos Baianos F.C. where Acabou Choare is a masterpiece of expansive progression in songwriting with no filler, this is merely a very good album with two filler songs. 8
>Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks: New York Sessions It's non-alignment with what was actually released is a bit of an overstatement. However, I think nearly all of these tracks lend themselves to a more minimal take. The structure is nearly the same, but it's satisfying to hear a more early-Dylan take on them. His best work for my money and I'm glad it exists. 8
>John Fahey - Your Past Comes Back to Haunt You A must-listen for anyone who is a self-described Fahey megafan (me). However, I'm not going to pretend like everything here is special. I had a strong dislike for nearly every song with Fahey doing a gruff blues singer impression. Super interesting to hear some of these melodies/ideas come up in later works, and I'm impressed by how much variation there is here, but there's simply just a ton of throwaway. 7
>Tim Follin & Geoff Follin - Silver Surfer. Never played the game, just saw the AVGN review. Apparently people hate this shit? A shame, because this is unquestionably one of the best 8-bit soundtracks out there. It doesn't have the memorability of Mega Man 2 nor the variability of Pokemon Gold but hey for a game everyone hates it's pretty damn good. Biggest issue with these hyper-intense 8-bit pieces is the worthless transition songs, which are especially damning considering this thing is only 15 minutes long. 7

Adam Morgan
>Cornelius - Mellow Waves As someone who digs the shit out of Point and Fantasma, this came as somewhat of a disappointment. Although it's probably the most soothing, calm album I've heard in a long time it just lacks much substance at all. Really effective as a meditative exercise but pretty worthless as pop music. 6
>Tracy Chapman - s/t Was expecting to show up with a review like "people THINK Fast Car is the best song by far here but..." however, I think basically the same thing everyone else does. Boring, right? It's not even the other songs' faults. Track 1, 5, and 9 are all just fine, albeit kinda dull. Fast Car is leagues above the rest of it unquestionably and probably one of the pop songs ever, not even considering my love for the O'Rourke cover. 5
>Animal Collective - Here Comes the Indian As someone who just defended Danse Manatee, an album more vehemently hated, this one surprised me how much it sucked. AnCo feels like they rely much more on their tribalism gimmicks, and in general just feels more empty. Anyone who likes this is stinky. 4
>Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star Todd Rundgren isn't good at experimental music or pop music, so end result is a headache. 4
>Twin Peaks: The Return Read my rym review pls 4
>Ultimate Spinach - s/t I think this settles it. Pure psych rock isn't for me. Of all of the big late 60s-70s psych rock groups, pretty much zero of them are worthwhile at all to me incl. the Doors, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, early Floyd, Love, save only Amon Düül II. I'm sure there's a great album in here, but it just feels primitive and boring to me and I can't help it. 3
didn't review everything but I can give more words if you want. what next?
Ayden Sanchez
I thought this would be some basic brooding techno, but wow it's fucking good. Even more enjoyable than other dark ambient contemporaries, how the fuck did they do it with just voices and crunchy sounds
I haven't even gone through most of the R&S label, but this is was a great album to start with.
do hymie's basement next. i am thinking about listening to that one myself.
Ayden Wilson
Tuco HATES that Burzum album Fishbach sounds like it ends up like a lot of the romanticizes 80s music that's popular today, I wonder why everyone is so fascinated with that decade in particular
Get on that RFTT
Joshua Cox
I bet you only like that guy because of his looks, he's not that good
Joseph Kelly
o.k. love you
okay love you
Joshua Phillips
mellow waves got THAT score? way better than I expected, guess I better check it out
Matthew Cruz
it's really not bad, but its strength lies in the atmosphere and groove rather than being cartoony and memorable like his previous releases. Could see someone getting very bored with it wanting those expectations though.
Nathan Johnson
>Tuco HATES that Burzum album Is that a reference of will a tripfag called Tuco slam my ass? But yeah, She has lots of potential and a very good ear for catchy rythms. I can only hope she goes for something more ambitious in her next album.
Juan Martin
Tuco is an Aussie who doesn't post much anymore
Jose Turner
terminus also hates burzum but I suspect that's more for the nazism than anything else
Carson Mitchell
sick
Hudson Adams
Reminder to join this if you're looking to boost your avant cred; will do this every week as long as at least a couple people do it. Gonna make an RYM list with the final pics in it for fun cataloging times.
Blake Scott
yeah thats the only way someone could potentially hate varg's lazily written, badly played buzzkill music
Luis Hill
well shit I just can't talle Varg seriously enough to be mad at him for his political views. He's like that weird ass uncle that smells funny and lives in the middle of nowhere and always says inappropiate bullshit but you still sorta like. His wife seems nice too.
Nolan Clark
i mean i'm not huge on burzum either, but it's not like it's particularly awful it's just mediocre. There's far worse metal out there especially stuff that's far more popular.
in general rating all an artists' albums a .5 is more telling of what you think of the artist than the music
i just think most musicians are dumbasses in general (especially the ones that got famous young) and their views on politics should be taken far less seriously by their audience and haters alike
>I bet you only like that guy because of his looks, he's not that good >not >that >good
uninstall yourself from my internet please
Andrew Richardson
Get on Burial and Noname, surprised you haven't already heard both albums
Nicholas Scott
>There's far worse metal out there especially stuff that's far more popular. the only thing worse than burzum are bandcamp tier burzum clones and pornogrind stuff like Sabaton or Asking Alexandria, that i assume you're thinking of, has its raison d'être because it's at least fun to see on festivals. Burzum's never even played a shit and his only audience are distant guys 16-21 who want to seem deep and edgy, and a handful of people who seriously buy into his ideology
Sebastian Brown
yeah I can't let go those avant-points
am I wrong?
Asher Jones
>a shit yes Burzum a shit but i meant to say a show
Cooper Sullivan
no, I was talking more about prog metal/djent which is popular and acclaimed (especially on rym) but is in general very bad
Oliver Myers
by the way, if any of you use RED and haven't logged in for a while, there's 25 FL tokens given out for Halloween
Matthew Hill
invite me so I can check that's true
Adam Morales
The interview is easy dude
Brandon Bennett
>am I wrong? absolutely
Justin Rogers
still hell no but okay
Dominic Roberts
you could say that just about everything
Dominic White
is red a new whatcd or sth?
Jason Gray
Yep, if you have your old wcd invite email you can get in without having to interview They're not as nice with the freeleech as wcd though, which is why 25 FL tokens is significant
If you can figure out how to use foobar you can pass the interview
oooh nice, i probably still have that what's the url?
Sebastian Bailey
wtf? I don't think I still have that email but I'll check, that's the only proof they accept right?
Grayson Butler
interviewfor.red/en/starting.html Go into the IRC and say you have proof you were on what after you queue, one of the mods will get to you eventually
Last I checked, yes.
Jeremiah Hernandez
thx, found the email :)
Hudson Ross
What's this 2014 shit.
Parker Diaz
did you listen to it yet or what
Ayden Peterson
:8)
>interview Sounds like a lot of work for the privilege of ripping my own music lol
Luis Kelly
welp thanks, couldn't find the email but I'll do the interview next month when I move back home (the internet at these apartments is really shitty to be productive in a tracker, don't know if that's a big deal to pass the interview since I as invited to what too)
also does anyone know if there is the a list of banned countries? I remember there was one for what (the irc) I mean just to know if I'll be able to do the interview
Liam Garcia
Nah, I don't do avant-trash, especially not if Jangle likes it. Or if you mean your tourney thing, ye. I disliked it a lot.
Colton Walker
There's a lot of weird one of a kind shit there (available in 100% FLAC if you care about such things), and you can get new releases in non-transcoded garbage formats the second they release most of the time. I think King Krule and John Maus leaked there, among other things.
You can just rip random CDs from libraries/pull random shit off bandcamp and upload it. Or get a seedbox if you just wanna farm ratio without any effort.
I can't seem to find a list of banned countries anywhere, I don't think there is any yet.
Bentley Turner
Do you still use your rym btw?
Ryan Scott
Love u nyarla
Christopher Campbell
do they allow ALAC rips
David Gray
that's good for me and yeah I know about those tips, I used to do the the former when I joined what but then I ended with shit I didn't like/want in my HDD, so I started using a seedbox. but now my upload speed is good enough back at home to do the work, thanks tho.
Christopher Peterson
No, because you can convert them to FLAC (which is much better for space) easily and if you did that people would just snatch it and reupload it as FLAC anyway They do allow for lossy Apple formats though, just because of iTunes exclusives
Connor Watson
Yeah I'll pass then, it's enough work ripping them for myself.
Kevin Reyes
>Or if you mean your tourney thing, ye. I disliked it a lot. I always rec you things you hate idk why or how
>Do you still use your rym btw? not really. I should go in an rate a few more things but im in no rush. why you ask?
Xavier Evans
I made a new account and added you a few days ago. I don't use it much either but it's a thing I have now.
Xavier Gray
>especially not if Jangle likes it what in tarnation
Chase Bailey
You're a poor man's Dogwander and I can't stand Dogwander or his taste.
Jack Campbell
never talk to me or my dog ever again
Brody Sullivan
stop ruining the illusion that we are all best friends >:C also I like your profile pic on rym, looks cool
Logan Reed
oh wait I just found your rym, I was looking at another that I thought was yours
Robert Lewis
The cool profile pic should have been a dead giveaway tho.
James Torres
Ray Armando - Mallet Hands >Latin Jazz I can't decide if this is groovy latin jazz or easy listening. Every time its groovin' the sax pops in and morphs into smooth jazz wank, but then the piano will pop in and do some really great improvisational part, turning the tide yet again. The only consistent part of this album is the percussion, which consists of fantasic latin-flavoured hand drumming, bells, shakers and the like. Would be a much better set without the saxophone player. 6.0 /10
Isaiah Murphy
>Renaldo & the Loaf - Gurdy Hurding And I tought the David Fenech album was entertaining, man this take it to another level, I'm glad for things like this, something you don't get to hear everyday, energetic rythms, experimental yet catchy, weird yet accesible. 8.5+
