We weren't even in the EEC at all until the mid-70s, somehow I think we'll manage.

But you were poor as fuck before. And you had to beg to be allowed back in. This will not end well.

EU propaganda.

wtf they sound like literal chimps

No, we weren't. We had a stagnant economy and high debt in large part because we had major military commitments. Then when we joined the EEC, we were paying enormously (second-highest net contributor or highest by GDP) for basically nothing in return, until we had a rebate that made the pain slightly more bearable. EEC membership wasn't some magical "good economy" charm, that isn't how it works. If you don't politically angle yourself the way the French did you just end up giving money away for nothing.

>in large part because we had major military commitments

More like you had nationalized industry and a work market paralyzed by unions and taxes.

hi thunderf00t.
what's up.

It's not immediately clear that our nationalised industries were performing poorly. The more obvious difference is that we were spending something like 8% of our GDP on a badly overstretched military when the rest of Europe was functionally disarmed.

>It's not immediately clear that our nationalised industries were performing poorly.

If it were doing good, it wouldn't need to be privatized.

Well, on a case by case basis that's possibly true, but if you take British Rail for instance, there are reports that it's costing us more in government subsidies than it did when it was state controlled. Plus most of our rail is just owned by foreign state operators like Deutsche Bahn or Abellio, it seems like rather a pointless exercise in that respect.

Well, stop subsidizing it then

Then how would it manage?

Yes mate we'll just get rid of rail transportation in the UK, great plan
