I've been watching the satellite imagery daily over Europe for the last few years, and in the last fortnight I have seen more lightning storms over Europe than ever before.
That being said, I don't believe it has anything to do with airplanes.

Make sure your geographical area is set to Europe if it doesn't auto-detect.
If you can see the red+yellow crosses, those are lightning strikes. As you can see, central europe is COVERED in lightning storms just now. It has been like this for the last two weeks. I've never seen as many electrical storms as this, as intense as this, for as long as this.
But I think it's just exceptional amounts of warm weather fronts meeting cold northern winds.

The yanks fly military aircraft in our airspace on a daily basis. Go out to the east and any of the ranges and you'll see F-15s all day long with the odd F-22 and A-10 on more rare occasions.
Plus they regularily fly military transport into the likes of RAF Lakenheath (USAF base).
