Perfect Horror Kino.

I love obscure Japanese films, such as this, as I am a serious film expert.

PRETTY WEIRD DUDE

>tfw you bought it on criterion exclusively because the cover artwork looks great

Weird as fuck and I love it for that alone.

S'alright. Seen it three times now and don't really get the hype.

It's not actually that good, it's just maximum level zane and it's reached a cult status with western audiences because it's the go-to weird asian movie. Criterion capitalized on this because they are smart at selling movies to middle class people for more money than they're worth

I enjoyed it, but I have no idea if the tone deafness was intentional or not.

Kung Fu best girl

Kung fu is best girl

The movie was shit and was only worth watching for the Asian girls.
This

cool

This is correct.

>see movie in Criterion
>assume it must be good
>it's just another nonsensical Japanese softcore porn

I like it a lot but I hope it doesn't become too popular or else I'm gonna have to stop liking it!

kek

Huh I always thought people meant pic related when they talked about House. It's a good horror but I never got why people thought it was experimental, but now I see that I was a retarded faggot all along!

To be fair, "House" is a super generic name in the grand scheme of things

You're telling me, Try finding a torrent for it!

How does it compare to Kwaidan or Shura? I've had all 3 downloaded for months

They're nothing alike. A guess Kwaidan has similarly interesting visuals. Shura is grim and deadly serious.
House is like Dario Argento went on an MDMA binge and discovered the green screen while filming Phenomena.

>Hay guise i have three moovies from japan they all the same rite?

I meant quality wise, which is the best?

Interesting summary, makes me want to watch it a lot more now.

Well, they're all horrors.

>all horrors

So are Saw, Eraserhead, and an American Werewolf in London. So similar!

I think Shura > Kwaidan > House. It's still fun though.

I don't really see why you're getting so upset, I'm just curious which I should check out first.

because you're reducing an entire national cinematic history to some reductive 'japanese sub-genre'. If you can't see what's wrong with that you should probably stop watching films

horror is a japanese sub-genre?

really really enjoyed it the first time i watched

i watched it again like a year later and found it insufferably boring. it's the type of movie that is only good if you go into it not knowing what to expect, meaning its ruined in repeat viewings

dont people normally refer to the jap one as "Hausu"?

>it's just another nonsensical Japanese softcore porn

pink movies?

Bizarre

Autistic people use romaji when there's an English title, yes.

That's what I got from watching it. It's zany appeal seems more like a one-and-done type flick. Watch it once just to see how comically weird it is, maybe a second time if you have friends/acquaintances who enjoy watching weird/bad flicks.

But otherwise, it doesn't seem like there's much depth to it.

That's my guess, although it's understandable for people to refer to the Japanese one as just "House", seeing that both the movie's title card and all of the posters for it refer to it as such

>hey guys I have three classic japanese horror movies, how do they compare?

Take it easy man, you are sperging out

Can someone please post a comprehensive list of each girl's breasts and when and how they were exposed

dude i love japanese films xd

no need to samefag, just watch more films then you won't categorize completely dissimilar movies as being comparable simply because they all came from japan

I recommend going for a walk and calming the fuck down

I'm not mad lol, just kind of disgusted. They're different emotions

You're honestly the weirdest poster I've seen here in months, take your meds freak.

>gets called out for being culturally oblivious
>has to hurl insults like 'weird' and 'freak'.

Uh huh.

Can someone recommend some Japanese films in general?

I've never really been exposed. Only seen (non-Kurosawa) Hausu, Kuroneko, Onibaba, (Kurosawa) Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, High and Low, Rashomon, Ran and Throne of Blood.

Never been an anime guy either honestly, I liked the GitS movie and Satoshi Kon's work but that's about it.

George Wendt rules.

Mizoguchi and Ozu

Anywhere to start in particular on either?

depends on what you want to see. If you want more samurai stuff, watch Kobayashi's samurai trilogy, if you want cool surrealism check out Teshigahara's adaptations of Kobo Abe's novels, if you want the most beautiful cinema you may ever see in your life, Ozu and Mizoguchi. Other great films are Late Chrysanthemums, Black Rain, Death By Hanging. Those last three aren't really related thematically, I just picked one film each by a great director.

Ugetsu, Good Morning, Green Tea Over Rice

Ozu - Tokyo Story, Late Spring
Mizo - Sansho the Bailiff, Ugetsu, Life of Oharu

Ozu may be difficult to get into. He employs a lot of static shots and allows his characters to move freely within the frame, so you have to train yourself to pay close attention rather than have the shots cater to you

There's just too much to make a good short recommendation list. I once typed out a whole chronological guide to Japanese directors throughout the ages for some fag on Sup Forums and he didn't even acknowledge it.

Masaki Kobayashi and Kenji Mizoguchi are the most obvious go-to directors if you like Kurosawa.
Check out Red Bear and The Hidden Fortress from Kurosawa too.

>depends on what you want to see
I want to see what people think Japanese film has to offer, I want to see a variety of things. I'm not looking for anything in particular. Hell, when I went into Kurosawa I was just interested in the idea of watching Samurai films but High and Low is my favorite of his that I've seen.

Thanks.

>I once typed out a whole chronological guide to Japanese directors throughout the ages for some fag on Sup Forums and he didn't even acknowledge it.
That's a shame, wish I could have seen it.

Thanks for the couple recommendations you did give.

Yeah I wish I had seen this list too

>I once typed out a whole chronological guide to Japanese directors throughout the ages
Why wouldn't you save this? Come on man, you've clearly got a lot to offer, don't let one faggot ruin that.

Very strange and unique. It's the little things that make it, like when the skeleton dances.

If you liked his High and Low you should watch Bad Sleep Well too.

tfw you will never lick kung fu sweaty body
