Northrop YB-35, the competition for the B-36 is some amazing, high-tech space shit from the 1940's.

These children on here haven't even heard of that show

It was superior to the B-36 in many ways, which was basically a bigger B-29 and become completely obsolete shortly after it was put into service. The jet powered variant, the B-49, was even more impressive, and although it had its fair share of problems, the B-36 had as many or more.

But due to convair being the manipulative, money grubbing cunts that they were, they used political machinations to kill the flying wing project. Then, to add insult to injury, the flying wings, which were a dream of jack northrop's, were all ordered scrapped, and the request to preserve one as a historic aircraft was denied.

"The Northrop Corporation was always a technological trailblazer, but the independent nature of Jack Northrop often collided with the political wheeling-and-dealing in Washington, which gravitated toward massive military appropriations; consequently, the obsolete Convair B-36 prevailed."

The loss of his brainchild was a crushing blow to Northrop. But there is a bittersweet ending to his story.

"Shortly before his death in 1981, he was given clearance to see designs and hold a scale model of the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit which shared many of the design features of his YB-35 and YB-49 designs. Northrop reportedly wrote on a sheet of paper "Now I know why God has kept me alive for 25 years". In the Wing Will Fly documentary, B-2 project designer John Cashen says: "As he held this model in his shaking hands, it was as if you could see his entire history with the flying wing passing through his mind." Jack Northrop died 10 months later, on February 18, 1981."

Yeah that whole escapade is a pretty interesting story. Funny how politics can trump common sense and strategy.
Also, don't forget they also ordered the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin parasite fighter to be attached to the B-36.

Cheaper and more advanced aircraft were available, but Convair must have had their noses in the right asses.

Offa my lawn, you

anyone who posts a B-52 or something similar obviously means Bazelgeuse

In 1949 there was even an investigation into the alleged favoritism

Of course, while Convair later struggled in the civilian airline market, and was eventually split up and consumed by the larger aircraft companies, Northrop flourished, bought Grumman, and today is the fifth largest defense contractor in the world. Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways. I just wish some of the old flying wings were still around.

Like, for example, the Go-229

Attached: Go-229.jpg (1000x430, 229K)

Yes, I would love to be able to see those old flying wings up close.

The fucking balls on those guys, too; Northrop, Sikorsky, Arthur Young....fucking guys just dreamed shit up and got in and flew it.
These are the people in which everyone should be looking up to.

The Blohm-Voss BV 141 seems like a concept that shouldn't have gotten beyond the initial drawing stage
