The world is vastly different then and now though. The natural globalization because of the modernization of society has made countries much more dependent on each other for pretty much everything. Leaving the EU would almost 100% lead to economic crisis in all but a few of the biggest members, and a crisis without the aid of EU money could take decades to fix and most likely even longer to return to the stability you have now.
Your option would be to sell your country to bigger powers like brittain is forced to do with china and the US.

If it were a sudden, unexpected exit, then probably yes. If they leave the EU but stay in EFTA, it's not going to happen.
