This is what my doorbell looks inside. It`s made in USSR a long time ago. The glass capsule is full of mercury. When someone rings, the capsule moves so the mercury can serve as a conductor to connect the two wires inside and produce a ring.

Because elemental mercury is not nearly as dangerous as people believe. You can inject mercury into your veins and it won't kill you as long as it's removed eventually. Inhalation of mercury vapor is dangerous but unless you purposefully put a flame under that tube while breathing in the fumes the danger is minimal. You can sit with a beaker full of liquid mercury under your nose for days on end with no ill effects.
