Here's a funny thing - economy failed because the state expected you to have a job, having a job was MANDATORY. So naturally people got drunk as fuck and didn't do anything at their jobs to the point where selling alcohol in the morning was illegal. Whats the boss gonna do fire you?

The downside was that you were poor at the end of the day (my mother is a judge and back then we lived in a shitty three room apartment). I used to teach Polish workers English as a second language and I met plenty of people, mainly old-timers, who had positive things to say about Poland in the USSR. There's a lot of nostalgia in all those Eastern Europe countries (with the exception of Ukraine, who still haven't come to terms with the outcome of world war 2 yet)
