Why is 90% of Sup Forums hip-hop and "dark"?
Most of this thread sounds the same, you could take most producers in this thread and have them share a single name, and nobody would notice.

but this dudes rapping sticks out like a sore thumb in here

Assmad darkfags with no argument.

I said "most". Stuff like this is good because of the rapper. The instrumental by itself is as boring as most of the stuff in this thread.

I'm not saying the hip-hop darkshit in this thread is BAD, I'm saying it's boring.
By itself with no rapper, it all sounds pretty much the same. The main issue I have with the genre is that the songs need a lyricist to carry them.

Leaving comments on these soundclouds in the next 15 min

Sure thing then.

Good choice of piano, did you write it yourself?
Drums are pretty flat for my taste, I would add a bit more reverb to make it blend a bit better with the feel of the track.

Random noises at the beginning don't sound good. It'd be better give the listener some breathing room before you come in. Let them feel the instrumental first.
You should work on your mixing as well, it's hard to understand you sometimes.

Not my cup of tea, it's definitely not something I would listen to on my free time.
Your drums are overpowering everything else. Either turn them down or EQ the snare to not rape my ears.

Can't understand the vocals at all, give them more room in your mix. Take down the highs on them as well, they sometimes hurt to listen to.
This could be good, just work on your mixing.

"oh yeah" Sounds pretty dumb. Same problem as an earlier one, give people breathing room. I wanted to listen to the instrumental there.
Your vocals are mixed in alright, and it's easy to understand you, but the voice is way too sharp. Bring down the highs a tiny bit and you're fine.

Getting some minor clashing with the vocals and the instrumental. Turn them up and bring up the 5k+ range a bit, and this issue should be fixed.
The guitar gets really repetitive.

Thank you for not making sounds at the beginning. Good vocal mixing, though you need to work on de-essing.
The instrumental is really boring, I feel you would work better with more varied music, try a different producer.

You successfully did what you set out to do. It's not something anyone would listen to on their free time though.
Stuff like this works in tandem with other forms of media, meaning that in order for this to be really nice to listen to, you need a good visual to finish setting the mood.
You'd be good for scoring films.

"Missed Phone Calls" is horrible. The theme is nice, but simply modulating the volume like that isn't going to help it sound interesting.
"The Real Nightmare On Berg" is the same.

Thank you for letting me hear the instrumental.
Vocal mixing is awful. You either need a new mic, or you need to stop whatever it is you're doing. Speak more clearly so that you're easier to understand.

>Black Saga
Bad mixing, bad composition. Study more.
>Lust
Good idea, bad execution. Better than Black Saga, but loops itself just as much.
>Neon Nest
Stop looping the same things over and over again. Don't play the same loop more than 4 times in a row. You've got potential, just study more.

This is very nice to listen to, one of the best posts in this thread.
Suffers from looping issues though. Try not to loop the same thing over and over again.

>Tang
Good use of noise, though it overstays its welcome.
The instrumental loops too much and gets boring about 1 minute in. Vocals are hard to understand, work on the mixing.
>Bud
Good intro, drums are overpowering everything else in the mix instead of working with it.
Your choice of sample to loop was poor in my opinion. It's not very interesting to listen to, and the looping gets old fast.
>Loop
It's kinda just that.

Good variation in the music, never feels boring.
The writing is pretty strange, but it's not bad. Not something I would listen to on my free time either.
I feel like this would be better if it had a strange music video.
Can't complain about the mixing either.

Would have been better without the noise in the background. Mixing in this is great otherwise.
Good variation, no looping issues, but pretty boring when it comes to the writing, it kinda sounds the same throughout, even though it's actually changing.

Absolutely great rapping. Instrumental is very bad. Sounds like you recorded a synth with a bad mic. Loops a lot.

>Sick Weeks
The looping brass and guitar is not nice to listen to. The drums coming in at :11 is very jarring, and doesn't really fit there.
Mixing is okay, suffers from looping issues.
1:30+ is infinitely better than the intro loop-wise, but it gets hard to listen to after a while. Needs a lot of work on the writing.
>Foolish Things
Good intro, bass doesn't sit in the mix well. Sounds jarring when it gets louder than the rest of the mix. Writing is boring until about 2 minutes in, then loops itself into being boring again.

Great mixing on the guitar, but I can't say the actual playing is that great. Some of it seriously sounds stretched for whatever reason. I also think this intro outstays it's welcome. The filter modulation on the transition to DNB doesn't sound good, it would have been better as an instant transition, rather than a quick one.
The arpeggio gets boring quickly. You can have variation in the drums and such, but if your main listening point isn't interesting, then everything else will feel just as uninteresting.

None of this is nice to listen to. There is a horrible lack of variation, alongside the bad synth choices. The lead melody is uninteresting, and loops too much. The drum loop is a huge turn-off as well.
Good choice of pad, it was kinda the only nice thing to hear in this.

>Micro
Kind of a mess. It's not very coherent.
>Like I Do
The sweeping assaulted my ears. Needs to be more varied, suffers from looping issues, especially in the drums.
>Internet Girlfriend
Good intro, very interesting to listen to. Not digging the drums. They should have been cleaner.

>Iron Heart
Seriously need to work on the mixing and singing. The guitars don't stand out enough when compared to the vocals. Try comparing your song to similar tracks and copy them.
>I loved you way too much
Having flashbacks to the previous song.

Continued...

continuing

>I loved you way too much
To pick up where I left off, if you want the guitar to sound interesting, then you need to write it to be interesting. This would probably sound better without the phaser. The vocals need less reverb on them, and need to be turned down.
You need to pan your guitars to create more of a range.
>Hurting me
Sounds exactly the same as the other two songs.
Check out this channel for mixing tips: youtube.com/user/recordingrevolution
Work on your writing.

>White Light
Good intro. Writing is very uninteresting, there's nothing that grabs my attention. I usually found myself listening to the repetitive drums because they stood out the most.
>Bitter Days
Good intro again. Suffers from similar problems, just not interesting to listen to for more than 30 seconds. Skipping anywhere in the song will sound the same as what you were listening to before you skipped.
>Away From Me
Very good intro, better written than the rest of your tracks. You actually have a melody to listen to this time around, which works with the looping background to keep it fresh throughout. Good track, I would listen to this on my spare time.

Not sure what you're trying to do with that singing in the intro.
The rapping, looping, and noise are all awful. The mixing is bad as well. Keep studying.

>A Discount On Birthday Cake
Good intro. Would have been way better without the obnoxious white noise. The drum samples aren't very nice to listen to. The cash register doesn't sound like it belongs in the song.
>Cheese
What am I even listening to? Not nice to listen to at all. Synth choice is awful, sudden transitions sound bad, everything sounds off-key.
>Fuck U
Interesting-ish drums. Low-pass piano with a shit-ton of reverb has been done to death.

>It Doesn't Matter
Good writing on the instrumental. Doesn't suffer from looping problems thanks to changing intensity. Rapping is awful though.

continuing

Continuing from where I left off:
Work on your slurring, get a better mic, and work on your mixing.

It takes too long for the actual song to start. I don't want to listen to 50 seconds of noise before the song actually starts.
Work on your mixing, seriously. Your voice is clear, but I can't hear you. It's way too quiet.
The song kinda sounds the same throughout as well until the synth solo comes in, which then overstays its welcome.

Not going to comment on the prod since it's not yours.
Work on your lyricism. You sound like that generic "white dude trynna rap" car commercial that they show kids in highschools to make them laugh.
The subject is also tired as shit.
Work on your vocal mixing. You should have made your voice a bit more crisp.

Sounds very samey throughout the song. It's not a looping issue, it's just that it sounds similar throughout. The vocal chops are nice, and don't overstay their welcome.
Nothing aside from the chops really caught my attention.

Needs a better kick in this track. Suffers from mixing issues. Needs more stereo width, everything is way too centered. Suffers from loop-syndrome sometimes.

>Lovely
What even is this looping? Sounds terrible.
The vocals need to be mixed in better. The flow is fine, but you don't really sound enthusiastic. You need to speak more clearly so you can be understood.
>Potent
Same problem as before.

>Remnants
Not my cup of tea, can't really say anything about it.
>Megalodon
Good writing here. Good track overall.

My first thought was "What am I listening to?"
The beat is absolutely awful, easily the worst I've heard yet.
The mixing needs work. The panning reverb doesn't sound nice at all. The best parts of the song don't have it.
If I had to sum up this song in a single word, it would be "Lazy".

Is this a joke?

Piano and woodwind are too loud.

Good cover, voice sounds really forced sometimes. Good vocal mixing, no other issues.

Beat is uninspired. Sounds the same as every other "low-pass piano" beat.
Vocal mixing is bad, turn them up.

Not interesting to listen to. Sounds samey throughout. Needs something to actually catch the attention of the listener.

Good vocal mixing. Piano loops too much.
Mixing in general is fine, lyricism needs work, flow is overdone.

...

This probably isn't the best way to promote our music. Does anyone have any other strategies? I thought about emailing YouTube promotion channels but it would probably only work if your music was cookie cutter lofi or whatever is popular at the moment.

Step 1: Be a good musician.
Step 2: Join music forums and talk to people.

Becoming popular isn't even hard if you're actually good at what you do. If people think your music sounds like shit, then guess what? It sounds like shit, and you won't get anything outside of a small niche audience.

Focus on bettering yourself instead of trying to spread your name. The people will eventually come to you.

I appreciate the criticism my man. I'm glad someone is actually going through and listening to what's wrong in these posts past the usual rec shit.

Tang was in the style of a beatmaker I really love, with less crisp drums and delay on the vocals. I don't know if I love the vocals over it though, since they came off of more minimal instrumentals.

I really dig the sample on Bud, but I get where you're coming from. Mixed it on my trash earbuds too. Gonna go back to this one and see what I can do.

You're not wrong on Loop. Made it in about 30 minutes hatching eggs in SM.

The instrumentation is great on this. I'm not trying to be rude, but the vocals sound off to me though almost like they don't belong or are out of key. So there you go, one positive one negative :)

I appreciate when someone takes the time to give constructive criticism in these threads. It rarely happens which is why so many of us dump and run. This should be encouraged and it doesn't even have to be by someone who uses soundcloud... These threads are too circumscribed.
