Learning to speak is not an accomplisent, when you can recite advanced texts flawlessly then you can say you've accomplished something.

Are you a monolingual pleb? Reciting a text is way easier than engaging in verbal communication, hell, it can even be done without knowing the respective language. Muslims all over the world learn Sura by heart without actually comprehending them.

That doesn't contradict it. One can memorize it line by line or state it as fluid communication requiring comprehension and possibly affirmation. If you can keep up with advanced writings as if you were thinking them on the spot, that surpasses being able to converse for it is practically high level communication

And I'm not, but I'm also illiterate

Speak:
English, French
Learning:
Greek, Portuguese

I'm a US tourist btw

i replied to the wrong person meant to do OP

This is some of the most vapid and awkwardly constructed writing I've read on this board. Stop trying so hard.

Monolingual here. Real question, what is the reason for a native english speaker to learn another language? I never learnt a second language at my school and have zero experience doing so. I just worry I'd put all that effort into something I'd never get to use and would just forget again.

I've no plans to live aboard and no connections to another country, so what's a good practical reason for me learn another?

Some things are better experienced in their native tongues. "Lost in translation" is a saying for a reason.

So you don't stay ignorant

Hope this doesn't count as thread jacking but I've been thinking about for awhile and I've decided to learn a language. I was recommended Spanish, French and possible German. I reckon that because I learnt Afrikaans as a 2nd language(though poorly) in school it would probably be easier for me.
I'm not really sure which I should to try learning as I don't really expect to be really using it the future other than to shitpost online or other cites.
