No, it is an incredibly helpful system that I'm thankful for, especially teaching in a transient district.
Common Core ensures that all students in K-12 are learning the similar curriculum in ELA and math. When I had a student move from New Mexico to Chicago mid-school year, we were +/- two weeks from the same pre-algebra unit he was doing across the country. It is helpful for keeping kids on a more challenging curriculum that is covering the same units everywhere. It is NOT a method of teaching like all the shitty memes I constantly see posted by non-educators on social media. Make sure you know how things work before you say stupid shit on the internet.

Common Core's math section is more challenging because they forced my very behind fifth graders to jump into seventh grade exponents way too early, but they eventually got it. It also forces kids to rely less on rote memorization and more on writing and explanations. Telling me 6 x 5 = 30 is one thing, but showing me how you can create six groups of five units to create a product of 30 is much more useful in the long run. Parents freaked out and complained that they weren't happy with "learning the new way of math" when it never changed. Students are just expected to defend their answers more and explain the process of how they came to the solution. Explaining the 'why' part of math I feel best encourages logic and reasoning skills - certainly more than memorizing a bunch of flash cards.

When you see a picture of some first grader with a single digit addition problem marked wrong with some goofy explanation, it has nothing to do with Common Core and everything to do with primary grade teachers almost ALWAYS being terrified of teaching math and creating poor assignments.
Hell, I was in a similar position when I acquired my LBS-1 to teach special education. I had spent my entire time in college learning law and how to write IEPs and not enough time on particular disciplines. I definitely had to brush up on the best ways to teach math [a subject I hated and now tutor in my free time because I love it so much] and ELA [a subject I still hate but had to rely on other educators to ensure I was providing the best service possible to my at risk sped kids]
