guitar players are egotistical morons. the only "musicians" who try to tear down virtuosity... if they can't play it, it's because they don't "want" to play it.
you never hear pianists or trumpeters shitting on virtuosos, but every time someone brings up Steve Vai or something a dozen guitar players will be like, "oh steve vai sucks it's just scales and arpeggios I don't like it i prefer the guitar stylings of the girl from Bikini Kill"
it's ok if you prefer David Gilmour or something, but don't kid yourself, Yngwie, Satch any of those guys can handle a Gilmour solo in their sleep.
you can even make fun of Yngwie for being a douche and having cheesy music, but shut the fuck up if your brittle ego can't admit the man is a great guitarist
>b-but i prefer the feedback artistry displayed by The Jesus and M-Mary Chain to Yngwie's m-mindless virtuosity and literal mastery of the g-guitar
He hasn’t written anything that doesn’t sound like complete trash fuck him.
...
It’s almost as if you believe that virtuosity of the electric guitar is a one-dimensional thing.

objectively this
my opinion:
pop music is the art of recorded music
classical music (in general) is the art of performed music
these virtuoso guitarists are perceived as shit as they emphasise their performance abilities in a framing that caters towards production aesthetics instead of performance aesthetics
the jesus and mary chain is more interesting to listen to because despite being awful 'musicians' they understood the tradition of recorded music was miles better than people like steve vai whose music, while skillfully performed, doesn't have as great production artistry
YOU RELEASED THE FUCKING FURY
they are only percieved as "shit" by jealous "guitarists"
anybody else who sees Satriani, Vai etc play guitar is like, "god damn that guy can play!" it might not be their favorite music, but they can at least respect the discipline and virtuosity of these musicians
no, it doesn't do what Pornography by The Cure does.
idk man he needs to ditch that custard yellow strat first, then we can talk about technical prowess and virtuosity.
stopped reading after 'my opinion:'
It's true
No
Page gets too much hate around here but robin grower is better
Ok fine then ill just say Guthrie govan who is better technically than those "virtuosos" and also actually creative
This
That's not Steve howe
This thread got me thinking,is being a decent songwriter infinitely more valuable than technical ability?
Even among people with a discerning ear, the ramones seem to be more respected than malmsteen, for an extreme example.
People who are loved for playing a guitar well are always pretentious shitbags that don't matter in the grand scope of music so why make a thread about them?
many people know ramones songs. very few can name a malmsteen song.
guitar is such a crap instrument
sounds like shit desu
My favorite is Steve Morse
Actually has the best timbre of any instrument.
>Satriani, Vai
These are fair
I wouldn't even consider Malmsteen a virtuoso since he truly does nothing but sweeping up and down scales
A master of any instrument should be able to move beyond just one dimension of sound.
I don't understand why he didn't start doing something else when shred started to die
Some people are just locked into a mindset of "technical equals good".
That, and it's very rare for someone to be able to cross genres and sound any good. 90% of musicians have a sound that's theirs, and won't really be able to deviate from it. It's the reason you see trendy genres (like metalcore trying to cross over into dubstep and electronic in the early 10s) failing miserably when they try something new. Change usually has to come gradually.
