He had two terms, each had 4 years. The law said he can't have a third term so Medvedev became the president and Putin became the prime-minister for the next 4 years. In the meantime they changed the laws so that Putin can have a 4th and a 5th term and also they made the terms 6 years. Next year he's gonna start his 5th term and will be ruling Russia at least until 2024.
