I'm halfway through the first season, when does this show get good?

It doesn't.

But does it at least get better?

>when does this show get good?
when it ends

It gets gradually better season by season. S1 is a comfy start, but the goat gabagool levels come later on.

Skip season 3

Its shit

Season 1 hasn't found the right tone yet and the subplot with the mom is incredibly annoying even though the later seasons put it to good use. Even so, you should be able to watch it without literally suffering. I wasn't that into it at that point, but you shouldn't be bored either.

Later on it turns into this incredibly poignant depiction of modern man with some amazing poetic flourishes. There are scenes in this show that can get me really emotional, just thinking back to them. The mafia stuff isn't really the point, and mostly there to add dramatic weight.

I'm watching the second half of season 6, and am I the only one kind of not too happy with this? I accept that everything has to go to shit now, but does Tony have to be this unbearably petty and unsympathetic?

What, no.

People rank the seasons in the most bizarre orders, but season 3 is one of the most universally praised ones.

Imo it's 6 (sublime) > 5 (fucking excellent) > 3 (trying slightly too hard, but first glimmers of sublimity) > 2 (based Sopranos) > 4 (trying too hard) > 1 (annoying mom subplot, uneven).

He always was. You've just been with him long enough to realise it.

All the characters, except for maybe Bobby and Ade, are totally reprehensible. I think the best example is in Pine Barrens, when you realise these two dudes will turn on each other as soon as shit hits the fan.

I guess you are right, and it did cross my mind that it was about reminding us about who these people actually are. I still feel it's a lot with the sudden gambling addiction, what he did to Christopher, etc. But then again I have a few more episodes for all of this to be developed fully satisfactorily.

If you didn't like College you can quit.

How did Tony get into the mob and AJ didn't?

Tony babied AJ, perhaps to make sure he was too "nice" to be in the mob. Consciously or not. That and he shielded AJ from knowing much longer than Tony himself knew about his father's business.

It gets noticeably better in the second season and Tony kills Christopher.

He doesn't want AJ in the mob, if anyone offered AJ work Tony would murder them. Also AJ is fucking useless so why would anyone ask him in the first place?

The gambling thing was hinted earlier, like when he goes to that Indian casino with Carmella's cousin and Furio. I think though it's just whether someone is up or down, and Chase wanted to show the audience what he was like when he was down. Tony has an addictive personality (eating, drinking, cheating on his wife etc.) and gambling is such a natural extension Tony's personality. Hesh mentions how bad he is with money.

I read something somewhere ages ago, that Chase was so shocked that people were actively rooting for Tony. Like living vicariously through him, watching him do all this terrible shit to other people. So maybe in a sense it was a fuck you to everyone. I've watched it twice with my dad and he loves Tony Soprano (dealing with the bitchy wife, getting heaps of pussy etc.) And season six really didn't hold anything back. I think Melfie is meant to be the "conscience" of the show (albeit unreliable at points).

Tbh by the end of the series I'm always done with everyone. You mentioned the thing with Chrissy, but at that moment I disliked him just as much. Sometimes I go back to comfy episodes, because I half watched it for how funny I found it and all the little things. Great show though. My all time favourite.

>I read something somewhere ages ago, that Chase was so shocked that people were actively rooting for Tony.
He's a fucking idiot if he's actually surprised by that I don't think he was.

Lol i love these adorable wirepleb threads

so transparent

I feel like one of the strengths of the show is precisely its grey morality. In some strange way everyone is a Tony. For example being a Westerner one's life style is dependent on the way the economy takes advantage of less developed countries, etc. The show also does a good job of capturing the hypocrisies and contradictions of priests, psychologists, the government, etc. At the point where we were at I was really invested in Christopher, despite his faults, having completed his movie, trying to distance himself from the mafia to stay sober, his new family, etc. Dedicating almost an entire episode (Kennedy and Heigl) to Tony not giving a shit to what happened to Christopher, which is arguably all his fault (pushing him for feeling insecure about their relationship), after generally being an unbearable idiot to everyone for several episodes was just really alienating to me. I guess the saving grace is the seeming complexity of Tony's emotions in that episode. Like the prostitute said, he is genuinely sad.

oh, but I like Chris

fuck off, this show is great from the first episode

For who

I enjoy every season sort of equal desu. Guessing thread may be bait

It gets so much better, though, and darker.

Anyone who doesn't like The Sopranos is probably just a GoT/BreakingBad shitter who needs constant ""tense"" drama and doesn't understand the concept of a show simply being a character study and following the rise and fall of a man in a time when his profession is being quickly left by the wayside. They'd quickly give up a tragic character like Tony, who legitimately is a complex person, believing he's constant doing the right thing but leaking cancer into EVERY aspect of his life on a daily basis. They'd rather have a character like Walt from BB that's more simple and ""badass"" so they can think they're smart when they think about how much he changed over the 6 seasons.

They also think shocking character deaths are what makes a show good (GoTbabbies)

Why didn't Paulie whack the old ladies for stealing his mas bread rolls? Is he a cuck?

If you didn't like it from Season 1, Episode 1, Scene 1, you're an sjw reddit cuck and you should probably kill yourself because you probably voted for Hillary
