Most of the people's liking of this music comes from the pleasant experiences they had while playing and associating the sound with it.
Most of it was never intended to be good as a standalone pieces and therefore the only retards evaluating it as such are the gamers.
That said tho, as with all music, there are exceptions (Silent Hill's dark ambient OST and Fez's soundtrack spring to mind).
Also, there's literally no situation where saying X music is "not real music" doesn't come off as pretentious and stupid.

Music is music regardless of the context that it's presented in. That being said, most people who listen to a lot of videogame music are absolute plebs. I legitimately met someone when I was in highschool who was ranting about how all rap music was shit, so I asked what he listens to, and, I shit you not, he said "I listen to dubstep remixes of legend of zelda music"
