It depends on the construction honestly. I've played laminated Japanese acoustics from the 70s that sound better than entry level solid wood martins. I think even laminated guitars "age" and give a better sound.
If you're talking about new guitars though, solid wood will almost always sound noticeably better.

If it's new you can probably assume the solid wood guitar will sound better if they use similar construction (shape,size,bracing etc..)

Both do, but people assume that Laminated guitars don't. If you want to find a real nice sounding cheap guitar look for a Yamaha or Alvarez Yairi from the 70s, people underrate the laminate models because they don't think that they improve with age.

Less volume and a less complex harmonic range (leading to the "boxy" sound people use) is what you can expect with a cheaper laminate guitar
