Anyone else feel a lack of new subcultures? I mean in the eighties you had (post) punk ,nineties you had techno and rave, early millennium had post-rock and electro. But there's nothing as of late that I can identify with. Which has caused me to basically revert to those other decades. Recent music just seems to kind of regurgitate the older stuff. feel free to prove me wrong though

We're doing monoculture now.

There are subcultures, you're just not a part of it. The subcultures that exist nowadays are pretty stratified and are well entrenched. Rap is hard to separate from its subculture, for instance.

Forget that. I'm making one now.

Robot Medicine.

Details are for robot dogs. Here's yours, scrub.

...............,

Goodbye. I'm not a person.
Screenshot this thread. I'm going down in history.

We have the whole vaporwave/lo-fi rap subculture thing online, but that's only really an alternative to the mainstream, and itself is mainly based on nostalgia.

Our culture has stagnated in general, which is where a lot of 'borrowing' from past culture is coming from, as music especially has been perfected to a precise profit-maximizing formula, which regular people don't know enough about to stray from. I expect as general tensions in society keep rising we'll get an explosion in most spheres of society at once, from economic to political to of course culture. Revolution.

Who gives a shit?

are you retarded. you liteatlly listed post punk and post rock. which are two genres made based off another genre
holy shit kill yourself

>are you retarded. you liteatlly

The internet has frozen time and destroyed youth culture (or perhaps youth culture is "the internet" now).
We're in a state of stasis. Fashions haven't really changed, music hasn't really changed, cinema hasn't really changed. Art is dead, there are no new movements anywhere.

Nobody asks for example how Beyonce, doing exactly what Beyonce was doing twenty years ago, is still a star. Think what Bowie or Madonna (in her day) had to in a decade to stay relevant by comparison.

Someone beamed up from the 90s would find everything much the same apart from the internet, now consider moving someone from the 50s twenty years ahead of time into the front row of a Bowie concert.

The more I think about this the more it creeps me out. This is really why older people despair at millennials, its the feeling they aren't doing their job somehow culturally but people can't quite articulate it.

literal retard

literature burrrrrr

This is pretty much what I was trying to say in Millennials are bored with modern culture, and the internet has for the first time allowed them, as a collective, to pick and chose from the list of past cultures. As such, we're able to get into cultures from booming, flourishing periods while living in stagnation. It's only inevitable that would happen when faced with what we have today.

Me, cause I feel lost and need something new I can be part of so I don't have to kill myself

Thanks for taking my post seriously, that's what I was trying to say. Exactly what is bothering me so much lately

Stop focusing on externals or looking to others, make your own music/art, you will feel better. that's actually how new scenes are created.

create your own scene

I think you make a good point about rising tensions. Its not just music that is like this, its political ideas as well. Neo-liberalism (and the economic structure it created) has failed and nobody knows what to do, clearly retreating into past ideas isn't the solution either. You see symptoms of it all over. We're in a slow crisis and something has to give. I feel like I'm living in a PKD novel sometimes so I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person who has noticed this.

>clearly retreating into past ideas isn't the solution either.
yes it is. go read some kirkegaard

There's a whole strain of leftist theory that explores the fact alone that no one has any idea what the fuck to do, I'd recommend giving it a read.

What I meant was that things like populism on the right and Corbyn-style socialism on the left are both essentially retro "retreat to the mythical past" movements that signal only the poverty of thought available to us and the depth of the problems we face. Neither path was considered anything other than laughable but people perceive them as our only solutions now (and they aren't).

Be a real chad, be an individual
Only fucking losers need subcultures

Trap and chillwave "aesthetic" are the culture.

Yung lean, lil pump, peep, etc. middleclass kids who get drunk and fuck shit up, bleach hair and shit. pretty big subculture in sweden.

>be an individiual
What does that even mean? Implying you can take on the whole world by yourself. that's just idiotic. Something a 16 year old cynic atheist would say. muh I'm an individual, a lone wolf, I don't need anyone and I make my own rules. Then two years later they get into college and fall into a pit of depression because of their delusions. Been there myself, it's fucking hard to get out of

Whites aren't allowed to have subcultures

You're lying to yourself; you'll end up insane if you go all the way or just end up a normal.

I think what's even scarier isn't even Millenials, it's Gen Z. They're the sons and daughters of Gen X, a generation that pretty much no one paid attention to, but they grew up in deep internet contact - and for the longest time Internet was a Millennial thing. They grew under a Millennial culture, and you've named many of the issues with Millennial culture. Now imagine a generation that has grown up with Millennial culture with its parental influence being the generation that has brought us things like the alternative rock wave of the 90's or golden age hip hop or even the explosion of electronic music.

They're coming of age now. What the fuck are these guys going to make?

No idea. They'll be completely dislodged from the physical, analogue world. Can't be healthy in any case. You hear stories of people in the past panicking over new inventions, what they'll do to youth etc. But I feel like this is different, this might actually have serious consequences, of a magnitude we don't yet understand. Oor maybe I'm just a pessismist. In any case, the internet has fucked with my life already, that's what I know for sure
