It's low substance but it doesn't aim that high to begin with. It does 100% of what it sets out to do and the execution is without much error. Pacing is solid, characterization for the cast is solid, action's good, the enemy is memorable etc.
Again the only real thing it does """"wrong"""" is it doesn't really have much in the way of advanced cinematography or heavy themes to explore. So there's no use of themes by the score or framing of things. There's little subtext. But again it doesn't even try for that and it's not a necessary element for what the movie wants to be.
Grade A movie for what it is really.

Exactly. I see some flaws in it when I watch it, even with my massive love for the movie. Some directing flaws, like the obvious second string directors doing the scene where Arnold and his team shoot out the Russian outpost. It's not deep, and it doesn't have some major, lofty theme (though I guess you could argue "going back to nature" to beat the Predator is a theme), but it set out to do what it did, and it excelled at it. Great OST, memorable characters, excellent villain, no dull scenes, never took itself too seriously or too flippantly. I think that's why I consider it a perfect movie. It feels confident in what it wanted to do, and it did it. It's a great sci-fi/action movie with the fat trimmed away.
