I think he probably knew it it, deep down, that he would have to, someday. But there are interviews with him going back as far as the 80s though, where he talks about how he wouldn't want to be President, and how he hopes someone else will step up and do the job of fixing all the problems as he saw them in the country. And it's pretty impressive that these videos recorded in the 80s and 90s show him talking about all the same positions that made it into his policy today. He has the same policy now as he did back then, which is pretty impressive as far as politics go. In the end nobody else ever stepped up to the plate so he had to do it himself.

And he looks around; and he knows that underneath their smiling facades, half of them are drug-addicts, some are paedophiles, and some are just downright dishonest and disgusting vultures, which he knows from personal experience.
And when the party is over, and he goes back to Trump Tower, he feels exhausted, but grateful to be back in his home again. With his collar loose and his shoes off, he looks out of his window, across Manhattan, and wonders whether he has got what it takes to run against those people.
