How is Dolphy better than Ayler
In literally every way
Name one way he wasn't better
Lol obvious rockist tourist
No Sun Ra?
These are the only free jazz saxophonists you know aren't they?
kek this
saxophonists only
sonny sharrock >
these are the prominent ones
how would you rank them
>he only knows the "prominent ones"
not an argumen fucking fag
im not a rockist. not a jazz traditionalist either.
Players who took the time to learn and master the bebop vocabulary almost always produce better "free jazz" than those who didn't.
Ornette>Coltrane>Pharaoh>Ayler>Dolphy
Just my personal preferment
Pretty much all of these were playing straight-forward stuff before going free. Except maybe Ayler, but he's the main person who started the movement.
A rocking would only know Coltrane
>straight forward stuff
lol I'm talking about bebop you little bitch. Coltrane and Dolphy are the only two on that list who could actually hang with bebop players.
>but he's the main person who started the movement.
>Ayler started the free jazz movement
top kek
Ornette did it before Albert although albert pushed it to another extreme.
This is true but even Coltrane shifted from bebop to other more exciting forms of jazz almost completely by mid 60's. Be it free jazz or just batshit insanity with only drums and sax like in "Interstellar Space". it is also possible that Dolphy might have shifted to that avenue had he lived a little longer.
Yeah no shit and the reason they were more successful at making that type of music is because they were able to bring harmonic sophistication to the music if they felt it needed it.
Not to mention the fact that ideas like phrasing and contour and shape apply to both bebop and free playing so they had a huge advantage by having already learned to apply these ideas to the much more defined bebop style. It shows in their playing, sometimes even in their wildest craziest stuff.
Ayler>Coltrane>Dolphy>Coleman>>>>>>Sanders
oldhead traditionalist

No love pour moi?
Braxton is a whole other ballgame
which album of his should i start with
Ornette Coleman Albert Ayler > John Coltrane Eric Dolphy > John Coltrane > Pharaoh Sanders
"For Alto" is an interesting way into Braxton. If it's too weird try his covers of Monk (Six Monk's Compositions)
None. But you are allowed to watch thisL
>all of these followers who have heard max like 10 jazz albums exaggeratingly underratimg Sanders cause JTG meme
Is /mu incapable of independent thought?
Coltrane > Ayler > Coleman > Dolphy > Sanders
what's with all the Sanders bashing?
Sanders is better as a sideman than on his own albums tho.
I agree, but he doesnt deserve ">>>>>>>>>>>>"
Ayler is everything that Sanders gets criticized for but 100 times worse. His playing is ridiculously primitive to the point of ineptitude, total rockist trash
>His playing is ridiculously primitive to the point of ineptitude, total rockist trash
I dont think you understand the point of free jazz then if that puts you off.
Playing freely doesn't mean you should abandon technique. That's what rockists don't get about free jazz, they only hear the volume and intensity and relate it to guitar freakouts and other rockist cliches.
ayler had incredible skill
you also must hate Coltranes later stuff then? say "ascension" or "interstellar space"?
Lol no he didn't, do you even play? He was known for his intensity not his proficiency in his instrument
No because there is clearly a high level of technique and harmonic inventiveness in coltranes free playing
fuck jtg and his drones for bringing this bullshit elitist attitude to jazz on Sup Forums
