youtube.com/watch?v=zvMGMW47gs0
I'm not sure why it's not more popular though.

>letting the last thread die

No, all of you faggots should die

I am not the same faggot, I just found the chance to open a /classical/ thread about renaissance because it's my favorite era

> Brumel

do you know his Gloria that was in civilization 4?
it's beyond heavenly

I mean this
youtube.com/watch?v=bWp0xxWM0wc

No I realized now that the previous thread hit the bump limit rather fast. So actually good work guys. Sorry about being a fag

Microtones are degenera....

youtube.com/watch?v=2Q1BiQzNAqY

Oh yeah I love that piece as well, don't play civ but that makes sense.
youtube.com/watch?v=ff3M1GEGJWc
Anyone else /classical/pleb?

Fuck, this tchaikovsky piece is so fucking great, I also recommend Rachmaninov verspers and Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Mokranjac if you like that orthodox kind of music

Ok thanks for recs friend.

I don't hear any microtones in this.

There aren't any.

There are in this though - same composer:

What does /classical/ think of James Ehnes?

bump because I hate all of the other threads on Sup Forums

de Machaut
youtube.com/watch?v=9ti59NdbG1c

who's is the best 15th century composer?
I nominate Ockeghem

idk

He's one of the top 5 best violinists in the world in my estimation.
>Hilary Hahn
>Janine Jansen
>James Ehnes
>???
>???

Of course Vengerov and Perlman in their respective primes were GOAT. But if we're talking about contemporary violinists there's very little competition to those three imo.

Chang, Bell, Kavakos, Repin, Rachlin, etc. All the bigger name professional violinists are good but I feel like they're more branded. Whereas Hahn and Ehnes play literally everything nearly perfect. Jansen is more modernist but she's the best at that style.

I have 5 recordings of his: Homage, Shost/Britten, Prokofiev, Bartok, and the Barber/Korngold/Walton.
I've also listened to his Sibelius, Elgar, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven.

I've never been disappointed. The only factor with Ehnes is that he plays so cleanly that its not always suitable to some music. Vengerov's shostakovich recordings are better since he grinds into it so much more. Ehnes sounds dainty in comparison.

Sorry I got taken into custody.
Good taste user.

Trash list.

>Trash list
>Doesn't bother listing any of his own
Classic.

Who would you rather? Zimmerman and Sophie Mutter? Now that I think of it they're both GOAT.

I'd list Yo Yo Ma and myself clearly.

>Carmignola
>Biondi
>Onofri
>Minasi/Sinkovski
>Pine
In that order.

OP you a real one for starting this thread.

Thanks for the rec's user. I still standby my choices, but its always nice to have variety.

Neat.

But gotta give Mutter some credit here:

>not liking Hahn
I knew you had shit taste Baroque anime user but please.

>m-muh pretty violinist waifu!!
Cringe.

Wait a minute. Did I just memed on by some pleb that listed a bunch of violinists that exclusively play baroque music?

Feelsbadman. And here I was taking it on faith that anyone that would be so condescending would actually listen to classical music.

>Thinking Hahn is a bad violinist
>In 2017

She has one of the best recent recordings of Schoenberg's concerto you pleb.

>says one of the vids produced by a violinists on my list is neat
>finds out that I listen mostly to baroque (which is why I feel comfortable reccing baroque violinists in the first place)
>"I-I never liked it anyway!!"
Wow... so this is the power of cognitive dissonance.

When is Anime&baroqueanon gonna make a chart?

I've made one and a half charts about the baroque era highlighting lesser known but still significant composers but I haven't found much time to finish it.
Also I promised to make a Vivaldi chart last year and never started on it lmao.

>responds with only "this list is shit" to a post with the greatest violinists
>then gives his(her) list of who they think are the greatest violinists
>its all people practicing an emotionless dead form

woah.. so this is the power of anime

Show us what you've got

Can't, on phone rn

I want frog and anime user to leave.

> Schoenberg's violin concerto

the most punchable violin concerto

I want to fucking die!
Piece for this feel?

Inevitably the list of greatest violinists requires rulings: the inevitable rejoinders of Grumiaux, Oistrakh and Menuhin arise when discussing Hahn and Ehnes as the greatest.

>talking to acquientance
>'oh you play violin? I love Lindsey Stirling!'
>Mfw

> acquientance

I didn't say that I didn't like it. I'm happy for recs.

But if you're going to condescend to someone by saying "TRASH LIST" as if you're an authority then i expect you to listen to more than baroque. Its pretty simple dawg.

You didn't frame it as "These violinists are the best at Baroque imo" or "These are the GOAT since i listen to Baroque".

The Big Boys concerto list =
>Beethoven
>Sibelius
>Brahms
>Shostakovich
>Tchaikovsky.
>Paganini caprices
>Wienaweski
>Ysaye

I just sort of assume that anyone worth listen to will generally have played most of those pieces and more. If your only niche is Baroque you're inherently limited.

>people replying without (You)s

I was talking about contemporary violinists. Ofc the GOAT list would be different.

I would probably feature Prime-Vengerov on there for one. Heifetz of course. I've heard some very good Grumiaux, but I'm not as familiar with the other oldies.

I always found Menuhin and Oistrakh a bit too stiff, or else its just the low-fi recording. The album of Menuhin playing with Grappeli is especially illustrative.

What is the technical convention for naming a scale/mode with multiple successive half-steps?

>Go see Hilary at Carnegie Hall for Bernstein's Serenade and some Sibelius
>Serenade was amazing, perfect as per Hahn's usual
>Tfw they replaced Sibelius with an orchestral piece last minute probably because she's pregnant

On a different note, what do you guys think of Joshua Bell?

Its a chromatic version of another scale

What is the "Bird Up" of classical music?

but is it one of those "add 9" or "add 13" things? How do you communicate which tones are being added?

What does "bird up" mean?

He's not bad. Not my favorite and I think he's a bit of a memer with the facial expressions and moving around and shit.

But he's solid tier 2 imo.

So who's in tier 1?

Read the thread bruh. Ehnes and Hahn are very good, janine jansen is one of my personal favs.

Zimmerman and mutter are an older gen but extremely talent too.

Are you talking purely living violinists? Mutter is a bit on the stale side imo.

Ilya Gringolts has been pushed a lot, getting recommendations for various recordings.

Standard musical notation isn't great for non-diatonic scales to be honest. Just do whatever you like.

Which instruments do you play /classical/?
Currently I only play piano and recorder but I'm looking to expand.
What's a good instrument that's easy to play and has a lot of nice solo pieces/melodies written for it?

piano

>easy to play and has a lot of nice solo pieces/melodies written for it
I would say piano

>What's a good instrument that's easy to play and has a lot of nice solo pieces/melodies written for it?
Pretty much all of them. Just play the one you want to play, because if you choose a new instrument for "practical reasons" you won't have the same motivation to learn as an instrument you actually really like.

Violin.
