Stallone's career is so odd compared to Arnold's. Arnold and most other action stars became famous by starring in dumb action flicks, Stallone got famous by starring in an Oscar winning drama. Tons of critics thought he was gonna become a Robert De Niro type actor but Rambo 2 cemented his action star reputation and since then he hasn't been able to break away from it. I'm sure Stallone is very happy with his millions and millions of dollars but I wouldn't be surprised if every now and then he thinks "Did I fuck up? Should I have tried being a serious actor? Maybe I would have an Oscar."

He was nominated for best actor AND best original screenplay for Rocky, user. Rambo and Rocky are ultimately victims of the franchises they spun off though, and so tarnish by proxy some of the artistic merits of the original movies. Rambo should have died at the end.

First Blood is basically an underrated look at PTSD and the way Vietnam vets were among some of the most mistreated abused and forgotten people in the country, because nobody really knew, realized or cared about the kinds of conditions over there.
That said, Vietnam really hurt America's macho cowboy winner attitude. And a lot of 80's action movies are basically about America winning vietnam. Think about that. Lots of 80's action movies are military porn where a super macho American soldier fights in a jungle or jungle-like setting and wins.
it's popular because from a technical standpoint it's the perfect screenplay that hits all the right parts, it's got clearly defined beginning middle, and end, with defined conflict, climax, etc etc
