Nu metal has actual hooks and semi-decent pop writing, making it a perfect balance between heavy music and mainstream music. In addition to this, it has an intensity and aggression that is missing in sleep inducing genres such as black metal and thrash metal. Seriously, most nu metal singers can scream way better than any kvlt black metal singer from Norway. And while there are no lead guitars, the slow downtuned riffs used are in no way different from the ones you would find in legit metal genres such as sludge.
