great chart! thanks man
taeko ohnuki is honestly great and city pop in general just kinda gets slept on cause everyone associates it with weebs

Stumbled upon Toshiki Kadomatsu some time ago and loved it, definitely gonna save this for future reference. Thanx user

You're among the Gods that redeem this shithole, good work.

Merry Christmas

thanks bb

God amongst pesants.

literally never heard any of this shit but this looks solid, good chart op

Thanks for the chart OP, good shit

Looks like a solid chart I'll use, thanks!

Thanks, you're a sweetheart

Japan had tons of good music in the 80's but vapormeme city pop was not among it.

What are the essentials? I never listened to City Pop before.

youtube.com/watch?v=k-KAY_Glmn4

this, city pop is just yacht rock for weeaboos who want to feel superior

make your own chart then faggot, this one has a pretty clear theme going

how do I actually parse what's good here

I've listened to some good songs from this genre which makes me want more but I've also listened to a LOT of mediocre stuff. what are some of your personal recs?

Op here, merry christmas.

Yep. Looked moreso when I used a different font. Couldn't be arsed to use the actual master system font. ITC Modern is hard to find
fontsinuse.com/uses/9507/sega-master-system-logo-and-accessory-game-pa

The essential starter City Pop albums are definitely:
>Sugar Babe - Songs (started the whole genre)
>Taeko Ohnuki - Sunshower
>Hiroshi Sato - Awakening (some people like This Boy better, but they share half the same tracks anyway)
>Eiichi Ohtaki - A Long Vacation
>Hosono, Yamashita, Suzuki - Pacific
>Tatsuro Yamashita - For You
>Makoto Matushita - First Light
>Seaside Lovers - Memories of Beach House

Your mileage wiil vary with those though. DESU, I'm not a big ohtaki fan, and I much prefer Go Ahead!, Moonglow, and Melodies over For You.

DESU I mostly I probably like 80s japanese ambient, new age,a and post-punk the mos from the era. post some recs ITT though if you've got good shit, spread the wealth.

I like pretty much most of everything on the chart, but I threw in stuff people post often. Like I don't care for Sea is a Lady but some people go apeshit over it. Another problem I found is that there are some artists, like the Happy End members (Hosono, Suzuki, Matsumoto, Ohtaki) whose best work is in the '70s and isn't very City Pop or '80s japan sounding at all. It sorta bummed me out to leave Tropical Dandy by Hosono off the list, because it's honestly one of the best pop-rock albums ever, it's just not city pop.

Anyway, my personal favorites on the list are prob
>Mari Iijima - Rose
>Toshifumi Hinata - Chat D'ete (his other work is marginally better, but not as 80s sounding)
>Taeko Ohnuki - Sunshower
>Shigeru Suzuki - Lagoon
>Yasuaki Shimizu - Music for Commercials
>Chakra - Satekoso
>Milky Way - Summertime Love Song
>Joe Hisashi - Curved Music
>Kazuhiko Katoh - Papa Highway
>Aragon
>Testpattern - Apres-Midi
>Water Melon Group - Cool Music (feat Yann Tomita of Doopees fame)

I'm less versed in late '60s / early '70s japanese pop. A place to start out would to look through soundtracks, as Japan tends to use pretty popular artists to make the soundtracks for major movies. It doesn't have any vocals, but you'd probably enjoy Shinichi Tanabe's soundtrack for Hell's Gate Island.

You could try Minako Yoshida's earlier work, but it's still probably funkier than what you're looking for. Yumi Matsutoya's '70s work is pretty lounge-y and similar to this.

Bump

Where should I go after Casiopea? I got a few T-Square stuff but I want to know if there's any other good fusion out there

probably one of the best charts i've ever seen on this board desu

Cosmos, Hiroshima, Yosino Fujimal, Sadao Watanabe, Yutaka Yokokura, Masato Honda, Yoshiaki Masuo, and Osamu Kitajima are all in a similar vein.

Desu the best japanese Jazz-Fusion album has to be Hiroshi Suzuki's "Cat" (1975)
Romance is easily one of my favorite jazz tracks of all time
youtube.com/watch?v=BFmH7moCL2c

+ Kazumi Watanabe and Jiro Inagaki
I should actually go back and add them to the chart. Memory Lane and Mermaid Boulevard are some of the better Jap-fusion albums from the period.

City pop peaked with Sunshower

Into the chart folder it goes

thanks OP!

Unfair considering that Sunshower is one of the best pop albums ever made. The lineup is fucking absurd:
Bass – Haruomi Hosono, Tsugutoshi Goto
Drums – Chris Parker (from Stuff)
Guitar – Kazumi Watanabe, Kenji Omura, Koichi Hara, Tsunehide Matsuki
Keyboards – Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yu Imai
Percussion – Nov Saito
Saxophone – Yasuaki Shimizu
Trombone – Shigeharu Mukai
Vocals [Background] – Tatsuro Yamashita

>no yellow magic orchestra

legit great chart but if it's exclusively stuff released in the 80's then you can't have Thousand Knives of Ryuichi Sakamoto since that's 1978

Naughty Boys, far right second row. It's more 80s sounding and just as good as solid state survivor, if you're going to comment on that.

it's like 78-91. The focus was more of the '80s sound than the strict time period. Yamashita's best work came out in like 78-79 as well, but comes across as '80s, you know what I mean?

you're blind
Naughty Boys is the last album on the second row

duly noted
glad i'm not the only one who thinks Ryuichi was doing 80's music back in the late 70's

oh, i really am blind
sry OP

Nice

God tier chart, OP. More content like this needs to be posted on this board.
