Is anyone else confused by how big this band got? It seems like not that long ago, it was basically a Sup Forums only thing. Now they have 30k reddit subscribers, tens of millions of youtube views and tens of thousands of ratings on RYM. The subreddit didn't crack 5k subscribers until early 2015 and then skyrocketed to 30k in just two years. For all the hype Exmilitary, TMS and NLDW got, the band still seemed relatively unknown compared to now. I personally discovered them in late 2011 when 'IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES' was spammed here constantly. Can be growth be explained through word of mouth and organic growth? Youtube algorithms? This band seems just way, way bigger than they used to be even just 3 years ago.

it goes it goes it goes

door hinge

They're just pop for edgy autists.

You may be underestimating how many people go on Sup Forums. MAY.

Is that pic supposed to be ordered from least attractive to most attractive?

t. female

stupid bitch

but andy is the most attractive

Could there be an alternate explanation...?

t. andy

Sup Forums is just the angrier part of an Internet echo chamber that is carefully exploited by large record companies, successful viral marketer indie acts, and large media corporations that want to sell you shit. DG were already really big when they first landed on the scene because they were totally curated. they got a middling but hopeful Pitchfork review, got spammed on tons of music forums, an up-and-coming successful YouTuber was probably paid (or at least spammed) to check out the album. they weren't an organic occurrence and they were never your special little band

They're the hypermasculine counter-thesis to Grimes

another stupid bitch

>The subreddit didn't crack 5k subscribers until early 2015 and then skyrocketed to 30k in just two years
Could this be down to the Jenny Death hype?

I just checked the subreddit metrics again. They gained over 10k subscribers in 2017 alone. It took until mid 2015 for the sub to reach 10k. Seriously, what blew them up? You'd think they would have reached their peak with TMS and the 10 Fantano gave them but back in 2012 the fanbase consisted of 99% Sup Forums.

you sound like chris ott or some retarded shit

to me it still seems like their peak mainstream relevancy was 2012, with The Money Store, breaking up with the label and leaking NLDW early. I remember hearing that NLDW got an insane amount of downloads the day that it leaked, in the millions.

During that period they got a ton of press, they did a lot of interviews and seemed to really be blowing up in a big way. Breaking up and the wait for Jenny Death most certainly brought a ton of hype, but it still didn't feel like they were quite as relevant as they were when Pitchfork were constantly riding their dick.

They haven't done a single interview since 2012, they have just released music, which is pretty crazy. It's hard to say if they had been bigger or not if they had kept up their 2012 shtick where they put a big focus on their image, doing photoshoots and interviews left and right.

I guess Bottomless Pit being tame and "shallow listening" was a way more successful venture than it seemed in these circles.

They put more and more focus on image and stunts as they went along. That's the kind of shit that encourages the growth of a dedicated fanbase. Which means they spread even further.

>to me it still seems like their peak mainstream relevancy was 2012

Yet their fanbase was only a blimp compared to what it is now.

I think their rise in popularity can be explained with the rise of 'meme culture'. I've seen some semi-viral videos with Death Grips music in them. Also alternative hip-hop got way bigger than it was in 2012 so people most likely found the band through recommendations. I also don't remember that many adolescent fans before 2015. Most of the pictures on the death grips subreddit are people who appear to be under 18 wearing DG merch, showing their tattoos etc.

I SNEAK UP ON ME

I SHED MY

OBEY ME POISON

You do realize they promoted themselves not only on Sup Forums but the entire site right?

That doesn't explain the meteoric rise in popularity that occurred in 2016/2017. They got all the critical acclaim with Exmilitary and TMS yet discussion about the band was almost exclusively on Sup Forums in 2012. The release of BP brought new excitement and expanded the fanbase a bit, yet they were still a Sup Forums only phenomenon. Suddenly 2016/2017 happens and their views on youtube and reddit subscribers explode.

According to google trends, they were at their most popular when Jenny Death dropped in Mars 2015. But have steadily been rising all this time

That's true, as horrifying as it is, """industrial""" hip hop blowing up like xxxtentacion probably is leading to people finding their way to DG.

I've seen people treat Death Grips as if it's a meme or joke before and it's just so depressing as someone that takes their music very seriously.

BP was mentioned on mtv Snapchat and it got a lot of my friends to start listening to them. Maybe it’s also due to the celebrities who like it?

...

i'm flattered to be compared to the absolute boy

come back when you're older than 17 and you'll realize we're right Homelander

motorcycle
sleeping bag

yes daddy

This was the case back in 2010-2012
What's changed is Twitter's been thrown into the mix and Sup Forums's mouth is sewn to Twitter's anus making the whole thing a loop

They had a snowball effect, I'm in mu for years but I only got into them in 2016 because I was so exposed to them on other places.
This is how things go, you start small and you gain followers.
Also to their credit they knew how to promote themselves and where to put their energy.
If you're surprised that a band that play non traditional\stray far from pop music is growing so much, then just remember that it's not the first time it's happened.

it's completely obvious when people are samefagging life into things none of us would care about

Andy looks like an european porn actor

Fantano also contributed in their notoriety

it's so shitty tho
why wont the nigger shut up for 30sec

You are aware MC Ride is basically a white guy in a black man's body? Watch his interviews.

>the absolute madmen made an intentionally shallow record that emulated their biggest commercial hit and it paid off

Is this performance art? are we in for the biggest pleb filter of all time with their next record?

what
how tf watching an itw will make him shut up, are you drunk?

take your shitstain self and flush it plox.
ok?

nice argument niggerfaggot

go, please.

prove that the instrumentals are better than average bleeps and that the guy doesn't ruin them and I'll gtfo

just go.

++

ok, vlad.

is it true sucking cock and eating cum will lower taxes and make america great again?

k, so you don't even try to redeem it and it's as bad as i first thought, nice meme yall got there

damn
why are you hurting me with your opinions on the internet?
ouch
oooow
bhaaaaaaaaa

that post doesn't help death drips a single bit, just proves their fans are retarded

oh.
really.
tell me more.

still not an argument justifiying why their singer won't let the music breath. Doesn't even adress the dubious quality of the instrumentals

yes, and?

>most acclaimed hip-hop act of the 2010s
>far reaching influence in the experimental scene
>inspired even the great David Bowie

It's pretty evident that you're just a pleb. This isn't 2012 anymore, the band has proven themselves to be of consistent quality.

dumb post

...

and you didn't make a point so far
david bowie is dead and your current year argument is worthless, the fact is the guy doesn't sing, his flow is shit, he just shouts, and the instrumentals are average at best

This band literally started their career with the entire fanbase of Hella, a fairly popular rock group.

much like nu-metal is a commercial rip-off of no wave and industrial metal death grips are a commercial rip-off of grime and actual experimental hip-hop like dalek

lemme guess.

you tried it, didnt you?

damn, this guy has hot salty opinions.

what did he mean by this

>nu-metal is a commercial rip-off of no wave and industrial metal

what the fuck

>grime
>not already commercial af

I want to like it, but tbf I don't get all the hype. Everything I've heard so far wasn't that great and people insult me when I say so

i suppose there was hype
i dont read any music/internet magazines or media so i really only hear about the hype here.

what have you heard?

im a janes addiction fan - first tune i heard was beware. felt like it was just made for me.

kicked around the other tracks, on exmilitary. shit was abrasive, wasnt sure how i felt, but one night it just made sense - that was the boundary they were creeping upon, it was punk as fuck.

Kek

Guy on the left definitely eat ass

they were pretty organic if you knew the origins of the band though, get fucked

Normies got a hold of them and turned them into a parody of themselves. They peaked at JD and should have just disbanded there.

They were big for pitchfork readers first and then grew a cult following outside of that. There's nothing surprising about their popularity when you listen to the music

>peaked at JD
>Steroids got released.

yeah nah mate steroids is the best thing they've done.

You used the rip-off meme but this time didn't even attempt to make sense

As with their music, the band itself is a grower. How it took some of a while to warm up to their sound, the same thing is happening with them slowly becoming more mainstream. It's just another layer of art.

>flow is shit
Nah man. He has some good style and a unique way of rapping. His lyrics are insane and no one else has come close to what he's doing. He's pioneering.
>doesn't sing
>all he does is shout
He focuses more on sound and how his lines are delivered than if you can actually hear them. It flows well with the music and carries the energy. They even take the indistinguishable lyrics and play around with it like in BB poison. They're self-aware.
>instrumentals are average
They said this before, but they're a very minimal band. The vocals, the beat/drums, and the production all come together to form something greater. Listening to the stems by themselves makes this apparent. The instrumentals are sort of boring and lack the energy that Stefan brings. All 3 aspects of this band, Zach, Andy, and Stefan are essential.

theyve been memed into popularity,

several of those shitty meme pages on instagram and twitter "ironically" like them. After that, all the little edgy "depressed" kids who think memes are the best thing ever end up "unironically" liking them.

Add to that, Tyler The Creator is a fan of them too, and his faggotass fans like everything he likes.

you should be ashamed of yourself, with words like that coming out of your mouth
you clearly spend too much time thinking about tyler the creators fanbase

>reddit subs
>yt clicks
>rym ratings
Unimportant internet stuff, theyre not big in the real world lmao
Nobody outside reddlt and reddlt2.0 (Sup Forums) gives a fuck about them or even heard of them
90% of their discog is unlistenable shit and memes anyway
Maybe Iam just not white and underage enough..
